Snettisham Common Pit re-exposed

Post date: Mar 10, 2015 1:21:23 PM

The geology of Snettisham Common Pit is once more exposed to view, thanks to a work programme funded by Snettisham Parish Council and carried out by local volunteers. This is part of heathland restoration work on the Common (County Wildlife Site no. 476), with advisory support from Helen Baczkowska of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

Strata of the Lower Cretaceous Greensand (Sandringham Sands below Dersingham Beds) can now be better seen, including interesting clefts and fault-lines in the rock. Trees and scrub have now been cleared and the build-up of talus has been removed, so exposing the quarry walls down to the quarry floor. It is hoped that sand martins, which used to nest in the pit, will return, and that ground-nesting wasps and bees will find the site to their liking.

We are working to designate the site as a County Geodiversity Site.
