CRAWFORD NOTCH

MAINE CENTRAL RAILROAD

The Crawford Notch was the scenic highlight of the Maine Central's line from Portland, Maine to St. Johnsbury, Vermont. From the Crawford Notch Station about 1900 feet high, the eastbound rail line drops about 900 feet in about eight miles at a grade rate of 2.2 per cent.
