Network Project

The Network Project was a research-and-action collective which began its investigation of U.S. network television broadcasting in January, 1971. In December, 1971, The Network Project released its study of the Public Broadcasting System, which served as the basis for a lawsuit filed in New York's Federal District Court charging that network with ten violations of the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 and the free speech provisions of the Constitution. The Fourth Network was available from the Project (see also "The Public Be Damned", The Nation, 3/13/72).

The Network Project produced numerous publications and two radio series, Feedback and Matrix. An attempt is made to provide here much of this otherwise inaccessible material. Anyone with material not provided here is urged to contact the author of this website so it can be made available.

The principal investigators of the Network Project were Gregory Knox, Marsha Kroll and Andrew Horowitz. The Project was headquartered at Earl Hall, Columbia University in New York thanks to the assistance of the Reverend Bill Starr.

The Feedback Series....

The Feedback series of 5 radio programs was produced and aired at WBAI radio beginning in 1971. Sadly, these masters have not yet been located (hopefully residing somewhere's in the WBAI vaults).

The Matrix Series....

The Matrix series of 5 radio programs was produced and aired at WRVR-FM in 1975. Engineering was by Phil Lee. Here are the original programs, plus one of the series which was not aired.
