Dear S Class Captains:

NYYC Annual Regatta This Weekend - Register Now

Currently, several S boats are registered for the NYYC Annual Regatta. Don't wait until the last minute! In prior years, this regatta held many starts, with a significant impact on our summer championship series standings. The long range forecast for next weekend calls for sunny, warm weather. There are nearly 200 boats registered for the regatta including many Etchells sailors preparing for their world championship the following weekend. Last year, we had 10 S Boats register for this event.

The starting sequence for this one-day, one-race regatta included several one-design fleets, none larger than the S Class with five boats on the line - with Mischief, Squaw, Osprey, Surprise and Shona representing our fleet in this event to raise funds for an important cause. After a brief delay awaiting the southerly breeze, S Class sailors fought for the pin end of a wide line located east of halfway rock, off the coast of Portsmouth. On the long beat back South to the bridge, the fleet looked for current relief hugging the eastern shore. Walter Bopp's Mischief had a strong start with an early lead and never looked back, holding a commanding lead throughout the race and winning first place. Excitement came in the fight for third place between Fred Roy's Surprise and Mike McCaffrey at the helm of Osprey, with several changes throughout the race. Ultimately Osprey won third place in a tacking duel on the final upwind leg, edging Surprise by just 18 seconds at the finish. Final results:

Skipper Dues

If you have not already paid your 2014 NBHSCA Skipper Dues, please do so by visiting the class Website at http://www.nbsclass.org/ and clicking the top link in the left hand side, "Online Payment: 2014 Skipper Dues". The dues are unchanged from prior years at $250. Per our class constitution, all boats must pay their Skipper Dues to be considered for the 2014 NBHSCA summer championship series.

Tuesday Nights

Tuesday Night Series at NYC has begun. With five boats on the line, Firefly won the first two races. The Tuesday Night series, run by Newport Yacht Club, is open to all. This non-spinnaker event makes for a fun evening on the water that doesn't require a lot of expert crew work on the bow. It's the best deal in town, under $100 to register for the entire season's worth of racing. Many Tuesday nights feature 2 races, and S Class sailors frequently gather afterwards at the Newport Yacht Club or other local favorites to "discuss" what happened at the last mark rounding. Photos taken last Tuesday from the RC boat by Bill Shea were featured this week by WoodenBoat on their Facebook page, generating over 700 "Likes" - see the photos (and consider sharing with your Facebook friends) by clicking here:
