That beauty seems to be in a surprisingly good shape after those years?

Yes it is in remarkable good shape considering it has been in saltwater for more than 60 years (fortunately on deep water)

"December 15, 1943 Fw-190A2 'Yellow 16' took of from the airfield Herdla (Herdlafjorden) in Norway. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot Josef Brenner [Kurt Kundrus ?] experienced engine trouble and had to make a controlled emergency landing on the water near the village of Solsvik(a) west of Bergen. Almost 63 years later, on November 1, 2006, the aircraft got air under its wing again, when it was raised from a depth of 60 meters after a 5 hour recovery operation.

The plane was indeed from 12/JG5.It had just taken off from Herdla airfield north of Bergen when the engine developed mechanical problems.According to witnesses in a village that was overflown by the plane,the pilot jettisoned the canopy before ditching the plane in shallow waters.Civilians rowed out and resqued the pilot.Usually,the Luftwaffe offered a sum of money to people who saved German lives but in this case the fishermen refused the money and asked for the release from prison of one of their colleagues.He was in jail for having listened illegaly to radiotransmissions from England. He was released.

Dear Jim and Isolde,

thankfully receiving your letter-card of 04.01.2001 , I would like to answer your questions on Jean-Michel Papillon etc.as follows.

If one reads all principal sources where he is to be found, there remain indeed some mysteries about his life and work.He is very lively discussed and not free of strong critics.Beside his technical abilities he seems to have had some good fantasy on his personal rank and artistic value.His success and becoming famous brought against him some grudgers.Especially the fact that his woodcuts were placed together with the copper-engravings of the best artists of that time, in the best publications of the French Illustrated Book of the 18.th century. His 'Recueil des Papillons' presented by himself to the Bibliotheque Royale consists of more than 5000 pieces, and his Title and head pieces for the 1727/1745 published Petits Almanachs de Paris were called after him 'papillons'.Jean Adhemar in his standard-work 'La Gravure originale au 18e siecle, states that Papillon wanted to become an artist as a child already and at the age of nine cutted copies after Callot and Israel Silvestre.He had to do this behind his fathers back.At the age of seventeen he started to cut heraldics, flower-garlands and head + tail-pieces for Paris Book Traders.His job inspired him to work up to complete exhaustion.His most famous works and wood-cut masterpieces became his final cuts of the well-known and celebrated Oudry edition of the La Fontaine Fables in Paris 1755-59.Cut together with Nicolas Le Sueur after the designs of Bachelier.This series of woodcuts and designs were famous enough so that Bachelier himself brought out another production of this designs.This time engraved and etched on copper by P.P.Choffard, c.1760 at Veuve Chereau, rue St.Jacques au Piliers d Or.Announced in four suites, but only two were finally realised.This information is from: Das Buch als Kunstwerk, Franzoesische Buecher aus der Bibliothek Hans Fuerstenberg.Ausstellung Schloss Ludwigsburg 1965.Katalog Nr.20.Last not least Papillon became well-known by his Traite historique et pratique de la gravure en bois.Paris 1766.Even if heavily discussed because of some incorrectness,in general today accepted as interesting source of reference.I like it, and read sometimes in it.There are many hidden information and marvellous small cuts by his hand all over its pages.I came by chance about this collection of cuts, which was in a large portfolio of works.On verso is always printed text to be found.Single prints without text on verso are not known.By the way this Oudry Edition was a financial desaster for the Publisher.Only with the King s personal help it became possible to complete the 4.th volume.Immense Paper costs and remuneration of c. forty best engravers of the time under the direction of Cochin for about five years represented huge financial efforts. Nevertheless this Masterpiece promptly became a classic to be copied in countless French paintings, carvings and tapestries, and later on book productions.Still today this Oeuvre is a highlight of every Rare Book Sale worldwide.At the end of my letter I will make an excursion to Papillons Traite Supplement, diving into the pleasing and interesting titles, cuts and notes of this 124-pages volume.

In memory of your love of Jean-Pierre Norblins miniature etchings, I will pay attention to a leaf of cuts on verso and recto by Papillon between page 20 and 23.It shows recto a set of 12 woodcuts of biblical scenes.Each c. 18/33 mm .Verso a set of 'Sternzeichen' each cut depicting Putti with the animals of the zodiac sign in a vivid scene.Each one 15/43 mm in size.Above both sets is placed a small fine head-piece in allegory or with symbolizing figures.Very fascinating woodcuts at the technical limit of miniature cutting on wood.I think pages 27-44 show interesting examples of personal correspondance between Papillon and Jean-Baptiste Oudry (dated 27.4.1733).And Pere du Halde.Jesuite and Expert of Asia and China.(dated 5.6.1735), Comte de Tourrettes-Villeneuve (dated 10.9.1752), Marquis de Bandol (dated 1766), J.N.Vatar Imprimeur du Roi (dated 6.1.1767), Cochin (dated 25.3.1767), etc.

All over interesting correspondance , especially the letters with du Halde touching the impression and engraving on wood in China. Pages 45-69 include some chapters with seducing headlines and head-pieces, like

On page 69 follows an 'Explication des cinq Estampes pour l Almanach projette de la Loterie Electorale Palatine a Mannheim'.Up to page 73. I sold this very rare Almanach some time ago to a Private Archive Collection. It was printed at Mannheim in 1770 by the Printing Room of the Loterie Palatine of Kurfuerst Carl-Theodor. And I was very happy to find these explications on the projected cuts, which were consequently realized indeed. Pages 74 to 81 follow two other inviting chapters for the interested reader :

Even if you were humorously understating with words as 'completely unknown to me' and 'this mysterious Monsieur Papillon', it was a great pleasure and good exercise for me to try the best possible answer and documentation for you and your two prints. It has been a long time since you inspired me to elaborate elegantly the life and work of these famous Messieurs. Papillon, both Father and Son would possibly have enjoyed it.

His Traite was commentated extensively in Chattos Treatise on Wood-Engraving with plates by J.Jackson.London 1839

Le Peintre ayant en vue la Famille royale, a voulu exprimer par cette allusion pittoresque et agreable l'affermissement du sceptre

Bearing this in mind, it is not so surprising then, that when the National Gallery was founded in 1824, the Marquis of Stafford was among its first benefactors, donating Rubens’s War and Peace in 1828 (NG 46). A decade later, his son, the future Earl of Ellesmere, presented two large cartoons by Agostino in 1837: Cephalus carried off by Aurora in her Chariot and A Woman borne off by a Sea God(?) (NG 147-8). Furthermore, the Earl of Ellesmere served as a Trustee of the National Gallery, London, for 20 years from 1835, going on to fulfil a similar function at the adjacent National Portrait Gallery for a year or so in 1856.

First edition of this splendid series of copper-plate engravings after the works of art in the Marquis of Stafford’s extensive collection, two folio volumes beautifully bound in contemporary straight-grain morocco gilt.

The engravings are arranged according to school and in chronological order; the Marquis’ collection was particularly strong in the various Italian, German, Flemish and Dutch schools. W. M. Craig drew the reductions, which were then skillfully translated to copper plates by some of the best engravers working in England at the time, including Heath, Romney, Fittler, and Tomkins himself. Also with line engravings of the 13 rooms of the Marquis’ London gallery, showing the location of each painting. There was also an issue of this edition with the plates mounted on card and hand-colored.

The title of Duke de La Rochefoucauld was a French peerage, one of most famous families of French nobility, whose origins go back to lord Rochefoucauld in Charente (department) of the 10th Century - 11th Century (with official evidence of nobility in 1019). It became Rochefoucauld in the 13th Century.

François VI, Duc de La Rochefoucauld, Prince de Marcillac (15 September 1613 – 17 March 1680) was a noted French author of maxims and memoirs. The view of human conduct his writings describe has been summed up by the words "everything is reducible to the motive of self-interest", though the term "gently cynical" has also been applied. Born in Paris in the Rue des Petits Champs, at a time when the royal court was oscillating between aiding the nobility and threatening it, he was considered an exemplar of the accomplished 17th-century nobleman. Until 1650, he bore the title of Prince de Marcillac.

La bibliotheque de la Duchesse d Enville

Au XVIIIeme siecle, la bibliotheque comptait plus de 10 000 ouvrages.

D une richesse et d un eclectisme incomparables, elle regroupait tous les sujets dignes d interet : recits de voyages, romans, poesie, essais, theatre, sciences, philosophie, botanique, architecture etc. Tous relies de cuir et marques aux armes du chateau.

De cette bibliotheque, aujourd hui dispersee, il ne reste que les rayonnages, peuples de fantome. Le lieu est magnifique, calme comme il se doit, et les livres blancs qui s alignent sur les etageres cotees conferent a ce lieu une atmosphere propice a l imaginaire.

La vente aux encheres de ce tresor, qui atteignait en 1987 quinze mille ouvrages, s est deroulee chez Sotheby's. Tous les livres sont marques du sceau du chateau et on en trouve régulièrement sur le marche, en particulier sur Internet.

Jean Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent (6 July 1778 – 22 December 1846) was a French naturalist. (His personal name is variously reported,

including "Jean Baptiste Marcellin" and "Jean Baptiste George Marie".)

Biography

He was born at Agen. He was sent as naturalist with Captain Nicolas Baudin's expedition to Australia in 1798, but left the vessel at Mauritius, and spent two years in exploring Réunion and other islands in the Indian Ocean. Joining the army on his return, he was present at the battle of Ulm and battle of Austerlitz, and in 1808 went to Spain with Marshal Soult. In 1815, he supported Napoleon and opposed the Bourbons. Consequently he was proscribed after the Bourbon restoration. But after several years of exile, he was allowed to return quietly to Paris in 1820. In 1829 he headed a scientific expedition to the Peloponnese, and in 1839 he had charge of the exploration of Algeria.

He was editor of the Dictionnaire classique d'histoire naturelle (Classical Dictionary of Natural History). His own publications include Essais sur les Iles Fortunées (1802; Essays on the Fortunate Islands Canary Islands), Voyage dans les Iles d'Afrique (1803; Travels in the Islands of Africa), Voyage souterrain, ou description du plateau de Saint-Pierre de Maestricht et de ses vastes cryptes (1821; Travels Underground, or Description of St. Pietersberg in Maastricht and Its Great Caves), L'Homme, essai zoologique sur le genre humain (1827; Man: Zoological Essay on the Human Species), in which he adopted a polygenist perspective. and Resume de la géographie de la Peninsule (1838; Summary of the Geography of the Iberian Peninsula).

Ludwig Hartmann Mayer wurde als zweiter Sohn des Friedrich Christoph Mayer (1762–1841), Amtmann der Herren von Helmstatt zu Bischofsheim geboren. Unter seinen 14 Paten war Carl Christoph von Helmstatt. Sein zweiter Vorname Hartmann ist der Geburtsname der Mutter. Er selbst nannte sich stets Louis.

Bereits der Vater soll zeichnerisches Talent gehabt haben. Nach dem Tode dessen Dienstherren 1795 zog die Familie 1797 zum neuen Wirkungsort des Vaters nach Heilbronn. Bruder Karl zog zu den Großeltern Hartmann nach Stuttgart und besuchte dort das Gymnasium, waehrend Louis seine Jugend in Heilbronn verbrachte und eine Ausbildung als Kaufmann absolvierte. Der jüngere Bruder August fiel 1812 in Russland.

Trotz frueher kuenstlerischen Neigungen war Louis Mayer zunaechst etliche Jahre für Handelshaeuser in Heidenheim, Stuttgart und Heilbronn (bei Carl Friedrich Lang Industriecomptoir) taetig. Erst ab 1824 im Alter von 33 Jahren besuchte er die Stuttgarter Akademie bei Gottlob Friedrich Steinkopf. 1830 bis 1832 fuehrten ihn Studienreisen quer durch Italien, anschließend weitere Reisen ueber Tirol, das Salzburger Land und die Steiermark in die Schweiz sowie durch den sueddeutschen Raum, wo er jeweils Landschaftsbilder zeichnete. Seine Zeichnungen und Aquarelle sind im Stil der Romantik gehalten und stellen die Stimmung der Landschaft in den Vordergrund. Die Aquarelle bzw. Lavis Zeichnungen dienten als Vorlage für Stahlstiche zur Illustration des Buches Tirol und Steiermark, 30 Bilder erschienen 1838 in dem Band Wanderungen durch Schwaben.

Christian Mayer (August 20, 1719 – April 16, 1783) was an Czech astronomer and teacher.

He was born in Modřice, Moravia. He became educated in Greek, Latin, mathematics, philosophy, and theology, although his place of studies is unknown. In his early twenties he decided to become a Jesuit, a path which caused him to leave his home due to the disapproval of his father. He entered the Society of Jesus in Mannheim in 1745. After completing his training he began teaching humanities.

By 1752 his reputation was such that he was selected as a professor of mathematics and physics at Heidelberg. By this age, however, he had developed a strong interest in astronomy. He was appointed Court Astronomer at Mannheim, and was tasked with selecting the instruments for the new observatories at Schwetzingen and Mannheim. With these completed, he was able to pursue his astronomical studies, and published numerous works. In 1769 he was invited to St. Petersburg to observe the transit of Venus, which he did together with Anders Johan Lexell. In 1773, the Jesuit order was dissolved by Pope Clement XIV, and consequently he was removed as Court Astronomer. However he was still able to continue his astronomical observations and studies. He applied for and was granted in December 1765 a Fellowship of the Royal Society.

He is most noted for pioneering the study of binary stars, although his equipment was ill-suitable for distinguishing between true binaries and coincident star alignments. In 1777-78 he compiled a catalog of 80 double stars, which he published in 1781.

During his lifetime he became a member of numerous learned societies. He died in Heidelberg.

Roberts Tagebuch: 22.April- Heute habe ich verschiedene Skizzen von der Stadt Tiberias bzw. von ihren Ueberresten angefertigt, denn fast jeder Winkel wurde durch das Erdbeben vom Januar 1837 mehr oder weniger zerstoert.

Die Stadtmauern, ein Werk der Sarazenen, bestanden aus maechtigen behauenen Steinbloecken, die heute ueberall verstreut und mit dem unteren Teil zuoberst herumliegen...

Das Erdbeben vom Januar 1837 hatte Tiberias weitgehend zerstoert. Die Stadt lag noch in Truemmern, als Roberts hierher kam und eine leidgepruefte Bevoelkerung antraf. Nur wenige Gebaeude hatten das Beben ueberstanden; am Stadteingang lagen die Reste einer Moschee. Aus dem Schutt ragten hier und da ein paar Baracken, in denen aeltere Juden lebten.Sie waren dank der Unterstuetzung der in alle Erdteile verstreuten Glaubensbrueder hierhergekommen, um hier ihre letzten Tage zu verleben.Tiberias ist eine der vier heiligen Staedte Judaeas neben Jerusalem, Hebron und Safed. Die Darstellung zeigt Safed vor dem Hintergrund des Libanongebirges. Die Stadt, die sich am Ort des alten Bethulia erhebt, entwickelte sich zu einem der bedeutendsten hebraeischen Studierzentren des Talmuds, nachdem die Juden 1492 aus Spanien vertrieben worden waren. Die Verbannten gruendeten zunaechst Tiberias eine bedeutende Rabbinerschule und errichteten 1563 die erste Druckerei Israels. In Safed fanden grosse Gelehrte Zuflucht wie beispielsweise Moshe Cordovero, Isaak Luria, Israel Najara und zahlreiche andere, die sich dem Studium der Heiligen Schrift widmeten und eine Exegese entwickelten, die den Zugang zur Kabbala erlaubte, mit der die geheimen mystischen Lehren des Judentums bezeichnet werden.

Roberts brach am 22.April 1839 vom See Genezareth zur Kueste auf und schlug fuer die Nacht sein Lager in der Naehe des einzigen Brunnens dieser Gegend auf.

Letter to Professor James Monson Nizza concerning the works of Jean Michel Papillon

Dear Jim and Isolde,

receiving your letter-card of 04.01.2001 , I would like to answer your questions on Jean-Michel Papillon etc.If one reads all principal sources where he is to be found, there remain indeed some mysteries about his life and work.He is very lively discussed and not free of strong critics.Beside his technical abilities he seems to have had some good fantasy on his personal rank and artistic value.His success and becoming famous brought against him some grudgers.Especially the fact that his woodcuts were placed together with the copper-engravings of the best artists of that time, in the best publications of the French Illustrated Book of the 18.th century. His 'Recueil des Papillons' presented by himself to the Bibliotheque Royale consists of more than 5000 pieces, and his Title and head pieces for the 1727/1745 published Petits Almanachs de Paris were called after him 'papillons'.Jean Adhemar in his standard-work 'La Gravure originale au 18e siecle, states that Papillon wanted to become artist as child already and at the age of nine cutted copies after Callot and Israel Silvestre.He had to do this behind his fathers back.At the age of seventeen he started to cut heraldics, flower-garlands and head + tail-pieces for Paris Book Traders.His job inspired him to work up to be knocked out.His most famous works and wood-cut masterpieces became his final cuts of the well-known and celebrated Oudry edition of the La Fontaine Fables in Paris 1755-59.Cut together with Nicolas Le Sueur after the designs of Bachelier.This series of woodcuts and designs were famous enough so that Bachelier himself brought out another production of this designs.This time engraved and etched on copper by P.P.Choffard, c.1760 at Veuve Chereau, rue St.Jacques au Piliers d Or.Announced in four suites, but realised were finally only two.This information is from: Das Buch als Kunstwerk, Franzoesische Buecher aus der Bibliothek Hans Fuerstenberg.Ausstellung Schloss Ludwigsburg 1965.Katalog Nr.20.Last not least Papillon became well-known by his Traite historique et pratique de la gravure en bois.Paris 1766.Even if heavily discussed because of some uncorrectness,in general today accepted as interesting source of reference.I like it, and read sometimes in it.There are many hidden informations and marvellous small cuts by his hand all over its pages.I came by chance about this collection of cuts, which was in a large portfolio of works.On verso is always printed text to be found.Single prints without text on verso are not known.By the way this Oudry Edition was a financial desaster for the Publisher.Only with the King s personal help it became possible to complete the 4.th volume.Immense Paper costs and paying c. forty engravers under the direction of Cochin for about five years were huge financial efforts to be made.Nevertheless this Masterpiece promptly became a classic to be copied in countless French paintings, carvings and tapestries, and later book productions.Still today this Oeuvre is a highlight of every Rare Book Sale worldwide.At the end of my letter I will make an excursion to Papillons Traite Supplement, diving into the pleasing and interesting titles, cuts and notes of this 124-pages volume.

In memory of your love of Jean-Pierre Norblins miniature etchings, I will pay attention to a leaf of cuts on verso and recto by Papillon between page 20 and 23.It shows recto a set of 12 woodcuts of biblical scenes.Each c. 18/33 mm .Verso a set of 'Sternzeichen' each cut depicting Putti with the animals of the monthly sign in a vivid scene.Each one 15/43 mm in size.Above both sets is placed a small fine head-piece in allegory or with symbolizing figures.Very fascinating woodcuts at the technical limit of miniature cutting on wood.I think pages 27-44 show interesting examples of personal correspondance between Papillon and Jean-Baptiste Oudry (dated 27.4.1733).And Pere du Halde.Jesuite and Expert of Asia and China.(dated 5.6.1735), Comte de Tourrettes-Villeneuve (dated 10.9.1752), Marquis de Bandol (dated 1766), J.N.Vatar Imprimeur du Roi (dated 6.1.1767), Cochin (dated 25.3.1767), etc.

All over interesting correspondance , especially the letters with du Halde touching the impression and engraving on wood in China. Pages 45-69 include some chapters with seducing headlines and head-pieces, like

On page 69 follows an 'Explication des cinq Estampes pour l Almanach projette de la Loterie Electorale Palatine a Mannheim'.Up to page 73. I sold this very rare Almanach some time ago to a Private Archive Collection. It was printed at Mannheim in 1770 by the Printing Room of the Loterie Palatine of Kurfuerst Carl-Theodor. And I was very happy to find these explications on the projected cuts, which were consequently realized indeed. Pages 74 to 81 follow two other inviting chapters for the interested reader :

Even if you were slightly kidding and showing a little understatement with words as 'completely unknown to me' and 'this mysterious Monsieur Papillon', it was a great pleasure and good exercise for me to try the best possible answer and documentation for you and your two prints. It s a long time that you brought me elegant and diplomatically to write a lot on this famous Messieurs. Papillon, both Father and Son would possibly have enjoyed it.

Bearing this in mind, it is not so surprising then, that when the National Gallery was founded in 1824, the Marquis of Stafford was among its first benefactors, donating Rubens’ War and Peace in 1828 (NG 46). A decade later, his son, the future Earl of Ellesmere, presented two large cartoons by Agostino in 1837: Cephalus carried off by Aurora in her Chariot and A Woman borne off by a Sea God(?) (NG 147-8). Furthermore, the Earl of Ellesmere served as a Trustee of the National Gallery, London, for 20 years from 1835, going on to fulfil a similar function at the adjacent National Portrait Gallery for a year or so in 1856.

First edition of this splendid series of copper-plate engravings after the works of art in the Marquis of Stafford’s extensive collection, two folio volumes beautifully bound in contemporary straight-grain morocco gilt.

The engravings are arranged according to school and in chronological order; the Marquis’ collection was particularly strong in the various Italian, German, Flemish and Dutch schools. W. M. Craig drew the reductions, which were then skillfully translated to copper plates by some of the best engravers working in England at the time, including Heath, Romney, Fittler, and Tomkins himself. Also with line engravings of the 13 rooms of the Marquis’ London gallery, showing the location of each painting. There was also an issue of this edition with the plates mounted on card and hand-colored.

The title of Duke de La Rochefoucauld was a French peerage, one of most famous families of French nobility, whose origins go back to lord Rochefoucauld in Charente (department) of the 10th Century - 11th Century (with official evidence of nobility in 1019). It became Rochefoucauld in the 13th Century.

François VI, Duc de La Rochefoucauld, Prince de Marcillac (15 September 1613 – 17 March 1680) was a noted French author of maxims and memoirs. The view of human conduct his writings describe has been summed up by the words "everything is reducible to the motive of self-interest", though the term "gently cynical" has also been applied. Born in Paris in the Rue des Petits Champs, at a time when the royal court was oscillating between aiding the nobility and threatening it, he was considered an exemplar of the accomplished 17th-century nobleman. Until 1650, he bore the title of Prince de Marcillac.

La bibliotheque de la Duchesse d Enville

Au XVIIIeme siecle, la bibliotheque comptait plus de 10 000 ouvrages.

D une richesse et d un eclectisme incomparables, elle regroupait tous les sujets dignes d interet : recits de voyages, romans, poesie, essais, theatre, sciences, philosophie, botanique, architecture etc. Tous relies de cuir et marques aux armes du chateau.

De cette bibliotheque, aujourd hui dispersee, il ne reste que les rayonnages, peuples de fantome. Le lieu est magnifique, calme comme il se doit, et les livres blancs qui s alignent sur les etageres cotees conferent a ce lieu une atmosphere propice a l imaginaire.

La vente aux encheres de ce tresor, qui atteignait en 1987 quinze mille ouvrages, s est deroulee chez Sotheby's. Tous les livres sont marques du sceau du chateau et on en trouve régulièrement sur le marche, en particulier sur Internet.

Jean Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent (6 July 1778 – 22 December 1846) was a French naturalist. (His personal name is variously reported, including "Jean Baptiste Marcellin" and "Jean Baptiste George Marie".)

Biography

He was born at Agen. He was sent as naturalist with Captain Nicolas Baudin's expedition to Australia in 1798, but left the vessel at Mauritius, and spent two years in exploring Réunion and other islands in the Indian Ocean. Joining the army on his return, he was present at the battle of Ulm and battle of Austerlitz, and in 1808 went to Spain with Marshal Soult. In 1815, he supported Napoleon and opposed the Bourbons. Consequently he was proscribed after the Bourbon restoration. But after several years of exile, he was allowed to return quietly to Paris in 1820. In 1829 he headed a scientific expedition to the Peloponnese, and in 1839 he had charge of the exploration of Algeria.

He was editor of the Dictionnaire classique d'histoire naturelle (Classical Dictionary of Natural History). His own publications include Essais sur les Iles Fortunées (1802; Essays on the Fortunate Islands Canary Islands), Voyage dans les Iles d'Afrique (1803; Travels in the Islands of Africa), Voyage souterrain, ou description du plateau de Saint-Pierre de Maestricht et de ses vastes cryptes (1821; Travels Underground, or Description of St. Pietersberg in Maastricht and Its Great Caves), L'Homme, essai zoologique sur le genre humain (1827; Man: Zoological Essay on the Human Species), in which he adopted a polygenist perspective. and Resume de la géographie de la Peninsule (1838; Summary of the Geography of the Iberian Peninsula).

Ludwig Hartmann Mayer wurde als zweiter Sohn des Friedrich Christoph Mayer (1762–1841), Amtmann der Herren von Helmstatt zu Bischofsheim geboren. Unter seinen 14 Paten war Carl Christoph von Helmstatt. Sein zweiter Vorname Hartmann ist der Geburtsname der Mutter. Er selbst nannte sich stets Louis.

Bereits der Vater soll zeichnerisches Talent gehabt haben. Nach dem Tode dessen Dienstherren 1795 zog die Familie 1797 zum neuen Wirkungsort des Vaters nach Heilbronn. Bruder Karl zog zu den Großeltern Hartmann nach Stuttgart und besuchte dort das Gymnasium, waehrend Louis seine Jugend in Heilbronn verbrachte und eine Ausbildung als Kaufmann absolvierte. Der juengere Bruder August fiel 1812 in Russland.

Trotz frueher kuenstlerischen Neigungen war Louis Mayer zunaechst etliche Jahre für Handelshaeuser in Heidenheim, Stuttgart und Heilbronn (bei Carl Friedrich Lang Industriecomptoir) taetig. Erst ab 1824 im Alter von 33 Jahren besuchte er die Stuttgarter Akademie bei Gottlob Friedrich Steinkopf. 1830 bis 1832 fuehrten ihn Studienreisen quer durch Italien, anschließend weitere Reisen ueber Tirol, das Salzburger Land und die Steiermark in die Schweiz sowie durch den sueddeutschen Raum, wo er jeweils Landschaftsbilder zeichnete. Seine Zeichnungen und Aquarelle sind im Stil der Romantik gehalten und stellen die Stimmung der Landschaft in den Vordergrund. Die Aquarelle bzw. Lavis Zeichnungen dienten als Vorlage für Stahlstiche zur Illustration des Buches Tirol und Steiermark , 30 Bilder erschienen 1838 in dem Band Wanderungen durch Schwaben.

Mayer unterhielt Kontakte zum Schwaebischen Dichterkreis und gehoerte zum Freundeskreis um Justinus Kerner, dessen Wohnhaus in Weinsberg er ebenfalls im Bild festhielt.

Christian Mayer (August 20, 1719 – April 16, 1783) was an Czech astronomer and teacher.

He was born in Modřice, Moravia. He became educated in Greek, Latin, mathematics, philosophy, and theology, although his place of studies is unknown. In his early twenties he decided to become a Jesuit, a path which caused him to leave his home due to the disapproval of his father. He entered the Society of Jesus in Mannheim in 1745. After completing his training he began teaching humanities.

By 1752 his reputation was such that he was selected as a professor of mathematics and physics at Heidelberg. By this age, however, he had developed a strong interest in astronomy. He was appointed Court Astronomer at Mannheim, and was tasked with selecting the instruments for the new observatories at Schwetzingen and Mannheim. With these completed, he was able to pursue his astronomical studies, and published numerous works. In 1769 he was invited to St. Petersburg to observe the transit of Venus, which he did together with Anders Johan Lexell. In 1773, the Jesuit order was dissolved by Pope Clement XIV, and consequently he was removed as Court Astronomer. However he was still able to continue his astronomical observations and studies. He applied for and was granted in December 1765 a Fellowship of the Royal Society.

He is most noted for pioneering the study of binary stars, although his equipment was ill-suitable for distinguishing between true binaries and coincident star alignments. In 1777-78 he compiled a catalog of 80 double stars, which he published in 1781.

During his lifetime he became a member of numerous learned societies. He died in Heidelberg.
