Minuteman Bikeway Extension Project

The Minuteman Bikeway Extension web site contains information about the proposed project to extend the Minuteman Bikeway over the abandoned rail bed owned by the Town of Bedford.

Basic Facts

    • About 2 miles long from Railroad Ave out to Route 62 near the town line
    • Town right of way is about 70 feet wide
    • Town Meeting 1971 approved funding to clear, grade, and roll the rail trail for the "purpose of bicycle travel and other proper travel"
    • 80-90% of the total cost to extend the Minuteman Bikeway could be covered by special state and federal transportation funds
    • Two trail surface options have been identified for the Minuteman Extension:
      • Limited access - a soft surface that would limit the accessibility for most users of the current Minuteman Bikeway
      • Full access - a paved surface that is more 'friendly' for most rail trail users
    • The Town's 'pre-application' for State/Federal funds for constructing a paved bike path was approved by the State Enhancements Selection Committee
    • The project is currently listed as 'short term' (0-5 years), i.e., the highest priority in the State's Regional Bicycle Plan
    • The Town must fund a "25% Design" which requires a surface decision, to proceed to the next step in the project
