Econ 8186, Search Reading Group

Santa Cruz Island, 2015

This reading group is designed to explore the frontier of research in the search and matching literature. In this class, we will study the most recent applications of search and matching models, as well as new theoretic advances. In each class we will work through two recent papers. The order in which we will cover the papers is based on the same progression of models taught in Econ 8503.

The course will not have a final. The grade will be based entirely on participation (50%) and 1 presentation (50%). These grading criteria and projects are designed to push your ability to articulate constructive criticism and formulate research questions.

Students will present one paper of their choice during the quarter. Each presentation will have 4 components:

  • Explain the punchline of the paper and the main mechanism in 15 slides or less.

  • Articulate a follow-up research question.

  • Write down a model framework which would allow you to answer the follow-up question.

  • Describe the data necessary to answer the question.
