Mock-up adapter plate

The distance between the flywheel and the clutch plate is to be preserved by our adapter construction. Otherwise the clutch will not properly engage or disengage. According to this post, the distance between the clutch mating area and the the front edge of the bellhousing should be 38mm. This, however, is for the 1.6, but the clutches are interchangeable as a unit between the 1.6 and 1.8, leading us to believe that the clutch assembly of the 1.8 retains this distance of 38mm.

In the local fablab, there is a laser cutter for MDF panels. By using a multiple of them together we can have a nice mock-up of the adapter plate:

Not very strong but it highlighted a few problem points before irreversibly cutting up a thick aluminium plate.
