Sailboat Rental
JCPRD permits Sailing 1 graduates to rent boats for the remainder of the year after graduation. In subsequent years, JCPRD requires you to be a member of JCSS to rent. If you have prior sailing experience, taking Sailing 1 is not required, and you may be able to rent after passing a proficiency test acceptably by designated JCSS members - as one of these members will likely not be on the race committee each week, it is recommended to reach out in advance to schedule time when a member will be at the lake early enough to run the test. It is still required to be a member of JCSS to rent.
Proficiency guidelines are:
Tie 3 knots: bowline, figure eight, and cleat hitch.
Other than help putting the boat in the water, set up a sailboat at the dock in the correct place for the wind direction.
Sail away from the dock and back without help.
The certification will be good for two years (an annual season). If a member does not rent any boats during that two-year time frame, that member will need to be re-certified.
Sunfish rental is available on any Sunday that the club is racing. See the club calendar for details. To rent, plan on arriving at the Shawnee Mission Park marina between 10:30 and 11. If you arrive after 11, it is likely that the race committee will be busy setting the race course, and you will not be able to rent. Additionally, while RC will be there to help get the hull in the water, it is the expectation of the renter that they will rig and de-rig the boat themselves, or with little help from the race committee. The rental cost for 2024 is $40, by cash or check (made out to Johnson County Parks and Recreation).
Renting a sailboat allows you to either cruise freely around the lake, or join in race activities for the day, between the start at 11 until 3, when the race committee will be tearing down the race course and be putting things away for the day.
The race committee will be watching to ensure that you are safe and will be there to assist if need be with the safety boat; however, as their goal is to hold races for JCSS, renting may be prohibited at the committee's discretion if the committee does not feel comfortable allowing renters in strong wind or other conditions where their focus may be split too thin between watching over both the renters and the racers.

Please note that, for signups, it may take up to an hour before your name shows up on the calendar event. Your name must be on the event for it to be official. If your name doesn't show up under the associated calendar event, ensure that (1) you are a club member, and (2) for rentals, there are still sufficient boats remaining, under the calendar event.
