Which Thousand Words?

“A picture tells a thousand words,” says the old adage. But the kind of story that a picture tells depends on which words you choose to describe it!

Examine this photograph carefully and imagine the different possible stories behind it:

Using some of the methods described in the handout “How to Detect Bias in the News,” brainstorm details that tell this story in two ways: one, portraying the young man in a positive/sympathetic light, and the other, portraying him in a negative/unsympathetic light.
