Cricket

At a 6-a-side softball cricket tournament in Boston, USA.

I started playing cricket in grade school and went on to play for the senior sides at Trinity College, Kandy. In the under 15 age group I won the best batsman award and in the under 17 age group I won the best all rounder award. I also had the opportunity to play for the Kandy district under 15 side which won the tri-series championship against Mathale and Kurunegala districts. At the first XI level I had the good fortune of playing in a couple of close matches including the one against St. Peters College, Colombo whose summary is given below. My highest batting score is 129 (141, 6x5) against Sri Rahula College, Katugastota in Katugastota. I remember taking 4 wickets in an innings, my best bowling figures, against Vidyartha College, Kandy in an under 17 match. I had the great pleasure of playing under legendary Kumar Sangakkara (1996/97 season) who went on to captain the national side and also with Kaushalya Weeraratne, the former Sri Lankan ODI player.

Trinity pull off 4-wkt win over St. Peter's

By Ranjan Anandappa

TRINITY COLLEGE pulled off a sensational four wicket win with a ball to spare in their inter-school cricket encounter against St. Peter's at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

Set to make 49 runs off five mandatory overs the Trinitians after few set backs reached the required runs in the penultimate delivery of the last over when Januka Attanayake hit Malinda Warnapura the Peterite captain for a boundary through mid wicket for a four.

The Trinitians required nine runs in the last over after Peterite spinner Chrishantha Pieris removed Suranga Morathota and Chaminda Aluthge in a single over after the Sri Lanka Under 19 poolist Suranga Morathota set the tempo for a Trinity victory with 26 including three boundaries and a six.

The Peterites declared their innings at their overnight score of 119 for 7 and Trinity in reply scored 150 in their first innings. Kaushalya Weeraratne (61) and Rodney Raffayal (24) were the main run getters.Left arm spinner Chrishantha Pieris was the chief wicket taker for the losers (5 for 50).

It was the Peterite batting in the second innings that really let them down. Medium pacer Suranga Morathota crashed through the Peterite batting in their second essay with 4 for 30 to reduce them to 79 all out.Besides Asitha de Silva ( 16) and Dilshan Rupasinghe (17) none made any worthwhile contributions.

St.Peter's 119 for 7 declared and 79 (Asitha de Silva 16,Dilshan Rupasinghe 17,Suranga Morathota 4 for 30, Kaushalya Weeraratne 3 for 22, Sudanga Fernando 2 for 12).

Trinity 150 (Rodney Raffayal 24, Kaushalya Weeraratne 61, Chaminda Aluthge 10 n.o, C. Pieris 5 for 50, Danushka Hettiarachchi 2 for 31.) and 51 for 6 (S. Morathota 26, R. Raffayal 11, Chrishantha Pieris 2 for 19.

Running

The finish of my first ever 5k run (25:06) in the the Leonardo Campus Run 2017 at WWU-Münster, Germany.

At Trinity College, Kandy I was a 400 m and an 800 m runner. 400 m is a very difficult distance to run. On the one hand, you have to run at a considerable speed. On the other hand, you need to conserve enough energy to run the last 100 m, at which point your muscles start to really tighten up. Therefore, unlike in the 100 m or the 200 m sprint, you have to continuously calibrate your speed. This "on-the-run" decision making process is painful, challenging, and joyful all at once! Much later in life, I heard the following quote from legendary UConn women's Basketball coach Geno Auriemma and it convinced me of the importance of doing sports and how it applies to real life:

"What counts is your ability to make decisions on the fly and figure things out that you haven't been told"
