Derck's Line

The following provides material specific to the line of Male descendants that follow from the Derck2 ( Johannes1) Brouwer Family Line

In this section we outline what is currently accepted as known from research records and compilations about the lives and geographic migrations of the descendants of. the male descendants of Derck2 Brouwer.  We begin with his sons:

Jan3 ca. bp. 9 June 1695 Flatbush, Kings Co., NY. m. Aegje Sprong

Elias3    b. ca. 1697 Flushing, Queens Co., NY m. Lena Willemse

Derick3  b. ca. 1699  Flatbush, Queens Co., NY

Pieter3   b. ca. 1700  Jamaica, Queens Co., NY m. Susanna Tietsoort

    Jacob3  b. ca. 1702 Jamaica, Queens Co., NY  m. Marike [--?--]

    Samuel3  b. ca. 1702/1703 Jamaica, Queens Co., NY m1. Margrita [--?--] m2d Aaffie Kienie

With the exception of Jan3, the dates of birth and birth order are conjectured.  The rationale, is based upon naming customs and fitting the six sons within the period between the known baptism of son Jan in June 1695 and the death of Derck assumed to be late 1702 or early 1703.

About Jan3 Brouwer

Geographic Locations: Flatbush, Flushing,Jamaica, Hempstead, Queens Co., NY 1695 - 1703, Middletown, Monmouth Co. NJ 1704- ca.1716 , Jamaica,Queens County, NY ca. 1716 to 1725-30, Raritan, Somerset County, NJ  ca. 1730 to 1732

The firm information we have about Jan3 is that he was recorded in the town records of Flatbush as baptised 9 June 1695, son of Dirck Brouwer and Hanna Daws, witnessed by Jan Brouwer and Jannetje Tunisse. The census of 1698 in Flushing, Queens county shows his father Derick Brewer, Hannah his wife and one child -- clearly Jan.

At the age of 7 or 8, upon the death of his father Derck2, ca.1702/3, his mother Hannah married Joseph Goulder of Gravesend, Kings County, New York, who was widowed and had a daughter named Nelke. By 1704, Hannah, Derck’s children; Jan3, Elias3, Pieter,3, Jacob3, and Samuel3, and Hanna’s 2d husband, Joseph Goulder, are likely  all in Middletown, Monmouth, New Jersey, where Hannah’s sister Patience Daws and her husband Peter Van Couwenhoven were living. Jan is assumed to have grown up in Middletown, NJ remaining there until his mother Hannah died sometime before 1716. Her death is assumed from the record that her husband Joseph Golder married Maria (Maritje) VanDyke on 22 October 1716, and I  assume that it was about this time that Jan3, when he was ~ 21 years of age, apparently returned to Jamaica, Queens County where his uncle Hendrick2 lived and where the baptism of his first son was recorded: Jan4 (Jan3, Derck2, Johannes1) 20 March 1726 Jamaica, Queens Co. NY.  It is his son Jan4 that is conjectured to be the “John, son of John” mentioned as the inheritor of his great-uncle Hendrick2’s property in Jamaica.

NOTE:

Although it is perfectly clear that this Jan3 Brouwer, bpt 9 June 1695, is the son of Dirck Brouwer and Hanna Daws, it is not conclusive that he is in fact the Jan3 who married Aegie Sprong and baptized his son in Jamaica, Queens County, NY.  It has often been claimed that he is instead the Jan3 Brouwer who married Helena Van Cleef in 1723 and that the Jan3 who married Agie Sprong is the son of Derck2’s brother Pieter2 Brouwer, the smith who resided in Flatlands.  One method of clearing the matter up is to locate living descendants of the two families and comparing DNA. It is currently postulated that the descendants of Pieter2 will have a value of 15 at marker DYS#19, whereas those descended from Derck2 will show a 16 at that locus. For more information see the “Speculation” page discussions regarding the use of DNA to separate the two family groups while seeking a link from John Brewer [b. ca. 1733, m. Elsie Lewis (Dunbar)] to Johannes Brouwer of Flatlands.

Jan3 died between 29 October 1732  (date of Will), and  13 November  1732 (date of inventory) in Somerset County, NJ. The Will was proved 30 November 1732 . His will identifies him as Bruer (Brower), John of Somerset Co., Farmer, and specifies four children “eldest son John, my second son Dirck, and my daughter Antye and also last and younger son..”  Witnesses to the will were Samuel Bruer, Cornelius Willemse, and William Post of Somerset.[ New Jersey Colonial Documents -Calendar of Wills 1701-1770, pg 70 and NYG&B Vol. 138 (2007) page 256] This younger son is not identified by name, but must have been born before the preparation of his will dated 29 Oct 1732.

After his death, the children, Jan4 (1726), Antie4 (ca. 1728) and Dirck4 (1730) were then raised in  by Cornelia Brower, wife of Hendrick2 Brower in Hempstead, NY.

About Elias3 Brouwer

Geographic Locations: Flushing, Jamaica, Hempstead, Queens Co., NY ca. 1697 - 1703, Middletown, Monmouth Co. NJ ca. 1704- ca. 1716 , Somerville/Raritan and Harlingen (all in Somerset County) and Readington (in Hunterdon County)  NJ  ca. 1716 to after 1744

Elias3 was likely born not long after May of 1698, when the census of the English province of New York was taken and Derck and Hanna Brouwer were listed in the Flushing Township, Queens County, N.Y. with their son, Jan, who was three. Elias was probably born at home on the 75 acre farmstead located near the borders of the townships of Flushing, Hempstead, and Jamaica in Queens County, N.Y. (in the modern vicinity of Queens Village). The farm was jointly owned by his father Derck2 and his uncle Hendrick2 Brouwer of Flatlands.  No known baptismal record exists for Elias3 because there was no established Dutch church in Queens County when he was born.  Queens, being an English settlement, had only a few Dutch citizens living in the entire county (there were only about 14 Dutch families in Flushing), and was predominantly Presbyterian and Episcopalian.  In accord with Dutch naming traditions of the time, being the second son, he was named Elias after his maternal grandfather, Elias Daws of Gravesend, Kings County, NY.  By 1700, his father Derck2 moved the family to the village of Jamaica where Derck's elder brother Johannes2 and his wife Sara Willemse were living.

Elias was not yet five years old when his paternal grandfather Johannes1 and his father Derck2 both died suddenly, possibly afflicted by the pestilence (both yellow fever and the small pox) that started in Manhattan in May of 1702.  Circa 1703, Hanna and the boys returned to her family roots in Gravesend, Kings County, to arrange transport to New Jersey where her father, Elias Daws (about 50 years of age), was living with her sister Patience and her husband Peter Couwenhoven.  .........Read More about Elias3 and his family.

3) Dirk3 or Derrick3 (Derck2, Johannes1) b. ca. 1699  Flatbush, Queens Co., NY

    No Known wife or Children

About Dirk3 Brouwer

Geographic Locations: Flatbush, Queens Co., NY ca. 1699 - 1703, Freehold/Middletown, Monmouth Co. NJ ca. 1704- ca. 1716 , Jamaica/Hempstead Queens County NY ca. 1716 - after 1742

Derick3, the third son of Hanna and Derck2,  born ca. 1699 in Flatbush, Queens County, NY moved about 1703 to Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ with his mother Hanna and his brothers shortly after his father Derck2 died.  At about 17 years of age, soon after his mother Hanna died in 1716, he is assumed to have left Monmouth County, N.J., returning to Jamaica, Queens County NY with his brother Jan3, where he may have worked on his uncle Hendrick2's farm in Jamaica.  He later lived in Hempstead and in 1738, at age 39, he was a member of the Hempstead militia, the Queens county company commanded by Captain Jacob Hickes, and was sent to Albany NY as part of the regiment of Foot Militia (there were eight companies) who were stationed at Fort Orange (Later called Albany). He is listed as Deric Brevar of the Hempstead militia[ page 576 Vol I NY Colonial Muster Rolls 1664-1775. In1742 there is a reference to him as an adjoining property owner to land “a little northward of Derick Brewer’s house.” [Hempstead Town Records 8:294 see also the citation in “The Brouwer Genealogy Data base” by Chris Chester]  Little else is currently known of him.

NOTE: He remains a possible father of Dirck4, the father of Maria5, Jan5, and Oliver5 in Hempstead, who is currently assigned  as a son of Jan3, i.e. Derck4( (Jan3, Derck2, Johannes1). See 4th generation sons of Jan3:  Derck4 was bpt 21 jun 1730 in Raritan (Somerville) NJ  -- and moved with his brother Jan4 to Hempstead, Queens Co. NY where he married Annetje (Hanna) c. 1759, and where he was recorded as father of Maria5, Jan 5 and Oliver5. -- also possibly George, Job and Richard who appear in the census of 1800 p. 257 NYG&B Vol 137 (2007) note 76.  But keep in mind that the assignment of parentage of Derck4 is not cast in stone and it could be Derck4 (Derick3, Derck2, Johannes1) instead.

About Pieter3 Brouwer

Geographic Locations: Jamaica, Queens Co., NY ca. 1700 -ca, 1703, Monmouth Co. NJ ca. 1703, Raritan/Readington, Somerset County NJ 1732 - after 1747

See the Brouwer Genealogy data base listed in “Resources”. Pieter3 was born ca. 1700  Jamaica, Queens Co., Long Island, New York.  Possibly the fourth son, although the birth order of the youngest three sons of his father Derck2 can not be determined with certainty. Pieter is placed in this family based on two of his children being named Derck, and Annatje, for his probable parents Derck Brouwer and Annatje/Hannah Daws, and he is located in the same church records during the same years as his presumed brothers Jan3 , Elias3 and Jacob3.  He would therefore have been raised in Freehold-Middletown. Monmouth Co., NJ with  the Golder family. As early as 1731 Peter3 Brouwer apparently moved to the Raritan/Readington area of New Jersey since it is recorded that he and his wife Susanna (Tietsoort) had their son Peter4 baptized there on 6 Aug 1732.  Elias3 and Lena baptized their daughter -- Judick4, on the same day. 23 May 1736, that his (assumed) younger brother Pieter3 Brouwer and his wife Suzanna (Tietsoort) baptized their daughter Annatje4, probably named after Hanna (Annetje) Daws Brouwer, her paternal grandmother. His brother Jacob3 had his first son Dirck4 baptized there on 29 May 1737. Once again, as with the baptism of Judick,  the baptism of David4 -- second son of Elias3 and Lena is at the same church on the same day, 14 May 1738, that Pieter3 and Susanna Brouwer baptize their daughter Margrietje4.  Two years later, Pieter3 and Susanna baptized their daughter Maria4 (Aug 10, 1740) and that Dec 1740 Elias3 baptized his son Elias4.  As with Elias3, Pieter3 is found as an adult, first at Raritan, and then at Readington, New Jersey.   Pieter3 is assumed to have died sometime after 1747.

6) Samuel3 (Derck2, Johannes1) b. ca. 1702/03 Jamaica, Queens Co., NY m.1st Margrita [--?--] by 1731; m. 2d Aaffje Kienie by 1741

    Children of Samuel3 and Margrita:

About Samuel3 Brouwer

Geographic Locations: Jamaica, Queens Co., NY ca. 1702 -ca, 1703, Monmouth Co. NJ ca. 1703-17??, Raritan/Readington, Somerset County NJ 1731 -to  after 1742

Samuel Brouwer, married first to Maragrite,  baptized his female children Annetie, Annate, Anate, (possibly named for Hannah (Annetje) Daws Brouwer), in the Raritan (Sommerville) Dutch Church during the same years and at the same church that Jacob3 Brouwer (identified as a son of Derck2 and Hannah) is baptizing his children. In fact on 19 Jan 1734/35, Samuel Brouwer and Maragrite baptized Anate on the same day that Jacob3 Brouwer and Mareyte baptized their third child Mareyete -- and they appear one after the other in the baptismal records:

1731       Aug 1    Jakop Brouer and Marike --Annatie (died young) (SSHQ 2(1913):215

1732       Oct 22     Brouer, Sammel and wife Maragrite -- Annate (SSHQ 2(1913):216

1734/35   Jan 19     Brouer, Samel and wife Maregrita -- Anate (SSHQ 2(1913):217

Brouer, Jakop and wife Mareyte -- Mareyte (SSHQ 2(1913):217

1745         Jan 7        Jacob Brouwer and Maria -- Antje (SSHQ 2(1913):302

The juxtaposition of the two Brouwer men, Jacob and Samuel, in Raritan, baptizing children carrying the same names (Annatie, Annate, etc.), all derivatives of Hannah (Annetje) during this period suggests they are brothers and both the sons of Derck2 and Hannah.  Based on locality and naming of their children, as well as the fact that Samuel Bruer was also witness to the will of Jan3 Brouwer in Somerset Co., November 1732,  I feel that Samuel has as much claim to be a child of Derck2 as Jacob3.  Samuel’s first daughter (Annate) is baptized one year after Jacob’s first daughter (Annatie), so it appears Samuel3 and Jacob3 are of a similar age. which is required if they are to be the last two sons of Derck2.

There is an additional baptism 16 may 1742,  child of Samuel Brouwer and Aaffje Kienie (GMNJ 25(1950):21)  From which we assume he has a second wife by 1741.

Unless later research show a son born to Samuel3 and his second wife, we will follow this line no further.
