Research themes

Our current team has three principal research themes.

    1. Theoretical

What are the formal building blocks from which we construct signs and sentences? Our team has done descriptive and analytic work on all linguistic levels: phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic.

    1. Phylogenetic

How are the sign languages of the world related to each other? Statistical analysis on the phonologies of over 25 sign languages has allowed us to reconstruct tentative historical relationships between sign languages and sign language families. Additionally, our team has done in depth comparative work on the grammars of specific sign languages, including LSF, LIS, and ASL.

    1. Experimental

What do we learn about sign language processing from psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic methodologies? In ongoing work, we use online and offline measures to examine the way that people produce and perceive sign language. Experiments using EEG are conducted in collaboration with the LSP, another lab in our department.
