Plan to drop by the park on the first Tuesday in August to visit with neighbors as we celebrate National Night Out from 5:30-7pmPelican snoballs will be present.

ENGRAVED BRICKS BACK IN THE PARK

The bricks have been installed at the S. Gregg entrance. We are working on an index to aid in finding an individual brick easily. Drop by and take a look.

Neighbors Lotte Chakowski, Richard Kherlopian and Meredith Berry helped but this project was successful because neighbor Jane Plante Chesnutt (former Heyward now Saluda Ave) supplied 4 of her employees from AOS Specialty Contractors with skills for this task. Thanks to Eloi, Abraham, Junior and Edwardo for making this possible.

WANT A TREE?

Columbia Green (see: https://www.columbiagreen.org/ ) is sponsoring a free tree giveaway. On their website below you will find more information on the program.

Partnering with Historic Columbia in a project to plant trees in underserved areas of Columbia identified as 'heat islands', many of the trees planted were dedicated to important residents in these neighborhoods. See some of the historical context uncovered in the project along with maps identifying neighborhoods and tree planting.

Meeting on the National Historic Register Program

There were about 28 neighbors in attendance on June 12th for an informational session on what the National Register program is (and isn't) for neighborhoods. Differences among existing City programs (architectural districts and protection areas, also called Community Character overlays) were addressed. The major benefit of being designated a National Register Historic District is that any property in the area could seek Bailey Bill support for exterior renovations. This is an optional step each homeowner could solicit - NOT a requirement or restriction for renovations, etc. The Bailey bill will freeze property taxes for 20 years and IS transferrable to subsequent owners for the 20 year time span. If the Bailey Bill is not used, there are no exterior renovation requirements or limitations from being in a National Register Historic District.
