Gurbachan Singh is an independent economist. He was previously visiting professor at the Department of Economics, Ashoka University.

He was earlier visiting the Economics and Planning Unit at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi Centre. Before that he was at the Centre for International Trade and Development, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).  He has also been guest faculty at Mnagement Development Institute (MDI), Gurugram.

His academic writings in journals are primarily on macro-financial stability. This is at the interface between financial economics (including behavioural finance), macroeconomics, central banking, public economics, and real estate economics. The work is in theory to explain the real world and to devise a simpler and well-targeted policy framework to reduce macro-financial instability in a sustainable way and with minimal adverse side-effects and after-effects.

He has somewhat discontinued writing  research papers for academic journals. Instead, the focus is on his book on "Asset Prices and Macroeconomics - Thinking Afresh on Basic Principles and Policy".

He received his PhD in Financial Economics from ISI (Delhi Centre), MA in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, and BA(H) in Economics from Hindu College, University of Delhi.

It is important to convey research findings to a larger audience. In this context, he writes a somewhat regular research based column for Business Standard; this is primarily in the Indian context. He has also contributed significantly to the portal, Ideas for India.
