Short Profile of Prof. (Dr.) Godfrey Louis M. Sc., Ph. D.:

 

Dr. Godfrey Louis is presently the Pro Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). He assumed office as Pro Vice Chancellor on 27th May 2009. Before this he was holding office as the Professor and Head of the Department of Physics in CUSAT itself. He was also holding position as the Syndicate and Senate member of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam during 2006 to 2009. He Joined CUSAT as a Professor of Physics in 2006. Before that, since 1987, for nearly 20 years he was doing teaching and research at School of Pure and Applied Physics of Mahatma Gandhi University. 

 

He took his Ph. D in Physics from CUSAT in 1995 and continued his research activity at M. G. University. He is basically an experimental Soild State Physicist and now also an internationally known Astrobiologist. He is known worldwide for his research work on the Red Rain Phenomenon of Kerala. In 2006 he published a paper in the reputed international journal “Astrophysics and Space Science” in which he proposed a radically new explanation for the red rain phenomenon, which says that the red micro particles, which caused the red rain, are possibly extraterrestrial biological cells. He has given invited talks about the red rain research in various international conferences and meetings held in Denmark, England, Switzerland and USA. His research work was discussed as a cover story in UK based New Scientist Magazine. His work was also highlighted in the BBC documentary, which was broadcasted in UK in 2006. Several other magazines and news media in various international languages have written articles on his work.   More work on this is in progress.

 

He has a number of research publications and 5 students have already taken Ph. D under his guidance for various investigations on a number of crystalline materials. 

 

He is also the president of Academy of Physics Teachers (APT), Kerala.
 
While at Mahatma Gandhi University he was also associated with activities connected with university teachers association. He served as the Secretary and later as the Vice President of Mahatma Gandhi University Teachers Association (MGUTA). At state level he was also associated with the Federation of University Teachers Associations (FUTA) and served as the Vice President of FUTA for more than one term.
