Land O Lakes Swamp

There is a swamp to the west of US 41, on Causeway Blvd. It is very difficult to get in, but quite pristine. I'm not a big fan of freshwater kayaking, but it is a nice change of pace from my usual salt-life. Entry is from a small open pond on the side of the road. there is just enough room to park and one or two spots along the steep bank where the vegetation has been cleared some by bank fishermen that can be used for launching. The east and south sides of the pond are bordered by cypress trees growing on a bank of sorts, but the SW corner opens into thick marsh. It is quite a chore to push your way through 75 feet of thick vegetation to the more or less open water. Once through, there is relatively open water with lily pads. Water levels can fluctuate in this swamp, and low water means more difficult passage. The swamp is a mixture of cypress, lilly pads, and occasional grass. Post Note: I haven't been there since 2012 and from looking at google satellite view, it appears that there is more vegetation than previously. It should be noted that water levels have a huge effect on how passable the swamp is by canoe or kayak. Fishing isn't very good here, but it may be excellent for duck hunting. google-site-verification: googleb3a55d1fb5d05d13.html

Areas like this are easier to paddle during higher water levels.
