I Know Where I'm Going !

Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger UK 1945 Black and white 92 minutes.

For our classic this season we have a real treat. Set in Scotland, filmed on the Isle of Mull, the film's subject is a struggle between materialism and romance. The climax takes place around the Corryvreckan whirlpool, north of Jura. Starring Roger Livesay and Wendy Hillier, it was co-written, directed and produced by Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell.

Although they are now seen as the greatest of British Film makers, their reputations had to be rescued by Martin Scorsese and others in the 1980s. Ryan Gilbey, writing in the Independent on Sunday in 2003, said: " For what it's worth, I think this is the most magical film Poewell and Pressburger ever made." The great Raymond Chandler wrote earlier: " I've never seen a picture which smelled of the wind and the rain in quite this way, nor one which so beautifully exploited the kind of scenery people actually live with, rather than the kind which is commercialised as a show piece."

The film will be introduced by Andrew Macdonald who is Emeric Pressburger's grandson. Andrew (with his wife and five children) divide their time between Mayfield and London. He is perhaps the UK's leading film producer, running DNA films in partnership with the Film Council and Fox Searchlight. He produced "Trainspotting", "The Beach" and "Sunshine" and works with his brother Kevin who directed "Touching the Void", previously shown by Film on Friday and, more recently "The Last King of Scotland" which was produced by Andrew.
