Current positions
I am an Associate Professor of Economics (with tenure) at the Department of Economic Analysis: Economic Theory and Economic History at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), Spain.
At UAM, I am a co-organiser of the Research Seminars in Economics; I am affiliated to the Education and Labour Market Research Group (EDMT); and I teach in the Master in Quantitative Economic Analysis (QuEA).
I am a Visiting Researcher at Lancaster University, UK; a Research Fellow at IZA, Bonn, Germany; an External Affiliate at HEDG, University of York, UK; and a Faculty Associate at the Canadian Centre for Health Economics (CCHE), University of Toronto, Canada; and an Adjunct Faculty at IE University, Spain.
Research interests
I have a wide range of research interests in the fields of the economics of health and human capital. Current research projects and interests include:
the intergenerational transmission of risky beahviours (crime and consumption of addictive goods);
the effects of health on labour supply;
the role of health information in health investment decisions;
socioeconomic causes and consequences of mental ill-health;
dynamic latent class models of heath care consumption;
selected policy issues around the opioid epidemic;
the economics of chronic conditions;
the impact of COVID-19 on subjective well-being;
the impact of noncognitive skills on educational outcomes;
health and energy poverty.
Previous positions
Previously, I have been a Senior Researcher (Tomás y Valiente Fellow) at the Madrid Institute for Advanced Study (MIAS), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) (2019-2024); a Lecturer and then a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor with tenure) at Lancaster University (2013-2019), UK; and a post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Economics (CHE), University of York (2009-2012), UK, funded by a large Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) grant.
I have held visiting positions at:
