Lithuania
Lithuania (Lietuva in Lithuanian) is situated on the south-eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, and has a total area of about 65,200 square kilometres. It is bordered to the west by the Baltic Sea, to the north by Latvia, to the east and south by Belarus, and to the south-west by Poland and the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation. For further details, see the Wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithuania.
The country consists of the following main geographical areas:
The most westerly part of the country on the mainland is a narrow, low-lying, coastal plain, only some 100 kilometres from north to south in length.
Off the mainland cost, Lithuania shares the Curonian Lagoon and Curonian Spit with the Russian Kaliningrad Enclave.
In the north-eastern part of the country, to the east of the coastal plain and north of the River Nemunas, is an extensive area of higher ground called the Samogitian Upland (Žemaičių aukštuma in Lithuanian).
To the east, the valley of the River Nevežis (a tributary of the River Nemunas) divides the Samogitian Upland from a region of numerous lakes and low hills forming the Aukstaiciai Upland (Aukštaičių aukštuma in Lithuanian), a Lithuanian part of the Baltic Uplands.
In the far south-eastern part of the country, south-east of the capital Vilnius and the River Neris, is the Medininkai Upland (Medininkų aukštuma in Lithuanian), a northern extension of the Belarusian Ridge.
The Baltic Uplands again encroach into the southern part of the country, east of the Upper Nemunas River, in an area called the Dzūkų Upland (Dzūkų aukštuma in Lithuanian), and also in the far south-western part of the country on the Polish border, in an area called Sūdūva Upland (Sūdūvos aukštuma in Lithuanian and Pojezierze Sułwalskie in Polish).
All the upland areas in the country are of morainic origin.
The highest hill in Lithuania is Aukštojas kalnas, in the Medininkai Upland near the southern border with Belarus. This has a height of 293.84 metres, and a prominence of c.70 metres. The most prominent hill in the country is situated in the Samogitian Upland - Medvėgalis kalnas, with a height of 234.6 metres and prominence of c.190 metres.
There are three hills in the country that have at least 100 metres of prominence.
The three Lithuanian hills of 100 metrs of prominence are also included in the downloadable leaflet 'Prominent Hills of The Baltic States', which can be downloaded from the Estonian page on this website.
A list of the hills of at least 100 metres of prominence is downloadable below.
