Bottling

Bottling is an action specific to the males starting when they're weaners. With the aid of their fore-flippers, they keep the mass of their body floating straight down in the water maintaining their heads above water with their noses pointing skyward. ( Maybe they do this to smell or hear if friend or foe is approaching.) From this position, they will also emit loud resonating roars maybe to attract or repel other elephant seals in the area.
