Human Service Study Abroad

The Jamaica Human Services study abroad program aims to prepare ODU students for work in in the field of Human Services and related service oriented professions by giving them hands-on experiences with culturally and ethnically diverse populations. The focus is on service learning within the community of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Communication, cultural sensitivity, helping skills and diversity are core competencies focused on in HMSV 343W/495. Coursework is focused on preparation for travel and service in Jamaica. Through participation in this service learning oriented study abroad experience, students will develop and sharpen their communication, cultural sensitivity, awareness and diversity competencies while examining firsthand the relationship among theory, research, and practice. This experience will simulate entering the workforce for the first time and servicing diverse clients grounded in their cultural beliefs.

PREREQUISITE for HMSV 343W: ENGL 211, 221C or 231C. Also there is a HMSV 341 (co-requisite). All students must be in good academic standing, and have the permission of the faculty leader to participate.

PREREQUISITE for HMSV 495: Senior standing or permission of instructor.

This course will satisfy the 300-400 Non-GEOG/HIST/POLS requirement for International Studies majors

*Students must register and pay for three credits of HMSV 343W or HMSV 495 (3 credits) during spring 2018 registration in order to participate in this program.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:

Program Cost with Dean's Academic scholarship*: 2,200

Cost includes:

Round trip airfare from/to Norfolk, airport transfers in Jamaica, accommodations (two people to a room), all breakfasts, boxed lunches during lectures, international travel & health insurance, study abroad fee, all in-country transportation and entrance fees.

Not included:

Tuition for 3 credits-participants are required to register for either HMSV 343W or HMSV 495, passport fees, meals other than those listed above, possible $25 airline luggage fee each way, and expenses of a personal nature.

*ODU scholarships:

Dean’s Education Abroad Awards are available for the first 7 qualified students accepted for this program. Eligibility: Full-time, degree-seeking, ODU student, 2.5 GPA or higher, approval of participation by the Office of Study Abroad and the program’s faculty leader. Completion of online application, advising and deposit payment holds your space for scholarship consideration; no additional scholarship application necessary.

If eligible, scholarship award will be credited to your student account sometime in late spring. The Office of Study Abroad handles these arrangements and will notify you via email.

Estimated cost without scholarship: $2,600

Financial Aid:

For some students, regular student financial aid support may be increased due to the additional cost of studying abroad. Students seeking financial aid should obtain a program budget from the Office of Study Abroad.

Payment Schedule: $300 deposit upon application; 1st half of remaining total due on November 17, 2017 and the 2nd half on January 12, 2018.
