Artist's Statement

I am interested in the history of collecting and forms of presenting art, material culture, and natural history, especially as seen in museum displays, illustrated atlases, archival photographs, and other means that facilitate historical, cultural, and morphological comparisons. I also love the history and visual documentation of ancient and classical architecture.

These subjects lead me to be concerned also with how knowledge in art, science and cultural history becomes framed and considered authoritative, with the attendant social and political implications.

All of this informs my decisions about visual motifs and compositional strategies, which I try to explore through a playful and fresh painterly handling.
