Marriner

Greeting Cards. Nice cards that I can use for writing notes. Homemade is preferred!

Books (on all books, paperback or used is great): Biographies of apostles or early church members. A good book on how to always be able to start a fire with just matches (seriously). Funny books. Classics.

Tools: Nice, simple toolbelt (not too many pockets - homemade is great). Wire strippers that really work. A nice multi-tip screwdriver (a good one that doesn't break fast). Some tool that I can't live without but haven't yet seen....

Bike stuff - lights, bells, those weird tools that are specialized, anything.

Dried fruit or other types of snack food.

Camping or canoeing stuff. A folding saw, a chair with a back that is light and small, fun campsite games to do with the family.

A suggestion for a really good case for a cell phone that isn't too big, protects if you drop it, and can be used to stand the thing up in either landscape or portrait.

Books

  • Fantasy/Sci-Fi are great.

  • Geeky physics books are great.

  • Philosophy... is sometimes great.

  • Dystopias... are like playing the saxophone. Easy to do poorly, very hard to do well, and when it is done well, some people don't like it anyway. I am one of those people who will acknowledge the quality of writing, complement the vision of the author, and then not enjoy a dystopian book. There occasionally are dystopias I enjoy, but I am currently not feeling like I need more authors yelling "DOOM" in my life.

  • Educational books are cool, as long as they're legitimately informative, and not in a subject I've already taken/am taking/will take in a year or two. I read informative books for fun, not for reviewing/studying/preparing. I find my own books for that. :)

  • Chess books are very welcome. Silman's Complete Endgame Course, Nimzowitch's Mein System (English version, of course), Yusupov's Build Up Your Chess (the first one, but if you want to get the whole set or books one and two or something that is also fine), Smith and Tikkanen's The Woodpecker Method, and other books written by authors GM level (or some well-respected IMs, like Jeremy Silman) aimed at club level players (somewhere between 1400-ish up to 2000-ish) are great. If I had to rank which ones I want most, I would probably have to say Yusupov. But any of these would be great.

Piano music

  • Note that the music does not have to be advanced to be enjoyable, but it can. That doesn't really matter to me, as long as it isn't "three blind mice" and sounds nice.

  • What is important is that it's not a "simplified" or "arranged for piano" version. If I'm going to play a piece, I'd like to play it the way the composer originally wrote it, on the instrument he originally wrote it for. If the composer himself wrote it for different instruments (like Sibelius wrote Finlandia for both orchestra and solo piano), that is fine, but otherwise, I'd like it the way the music was originally written..

We're looking for toys and things that will be interesting for a LONG TIME to a pre-schooler. Cuz she spends a lot of time playing by herself, and it's just gonna be more so with the pandemic winter. Sigh. So yeah, toys that will keep a kid engaged for a while.
