Columbian Model & Exhibit Works is certified as a women’s business enterprise through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation’s largest third party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women in the US.
In business for 20 years, we are one of the largest exhibit and architectural model making firms in the Midwest. Under the leadership of Catherine E. Tinker, J.D. (Washington University, St. Louis, 1980) , our team is trained in architecture, product design, painting and sculpture, computer science and law. Since the owner is an experienced Trial Lawyer. We make models and graphic boards for use in the courtroom and during trial preparation and discovery. Our national client base includes real estate developers, large corporations, museums, foundations and attorneys. Models and exhibits are fabricated with our laser cutters, large format printers, high-definition 3-d printers and computerized milling machine. By combining depth of experience with the latest technologies, we create and manage unique displays. Our service capabilities include 3-d milling of topographic models, 3-d printing from 3-d cad drawings and laser cutting from 2-d cad drawings. We provide these services to architects, engineers and other experts. For 20 years we have consistently managed and produced quality models and exhibits for satisfied customers within budget and on schedule. (see References) Our key personnel are experienced, smart, creative, competent and reliable. In our 10,000 square foot studio we routinely manage numerous projects simultaneously. (see Resumes) Over 150 years of combined experience in the model making and exhibit fabrication business has helped us to develop strong ties with professionals in a wide variety of relevant industries including architects, engineers, graphic designers, exhibitors, attorneys, artists, real estate developers, product designers, furniture designers and fabricators, exhibit designers and fabricators, museums exhibitors and independent contractors in several trades. We were hired by the Chicago Architectural Foundation as the Model Designer/Coordinator to provide design and coordination services for a scale model of a major portion of the City of Chicago currently on exhibit at the Chicago Architecture Foundation in the atrium of the Santa Fe Building on Michigan Avenue. This exhibit is on public display until November of 2010. For this project we worked with the CAF to produce the design of the model and managed and processed massive quantities of technical data from design through fabrication. We researched and coordinated the acquisition of qualified fabricators with a constant eye toward budgetary and scheduling concerns. We prepared all the building files for 3D printing, we coordinated the 3D printing production, we finished the buildings, and we designed and built the base. We installed and continue to help maintain the model. On the portion of this website devoted to this project, you can see information about the process, assembly and installation. (Includes video of TV coverage, actual fabrication process and our installation) Hopefully, you like looking at pictures of exceptional scale models. I hope you enjoy reviewing 20 years of model making. Please contact us with questions or comments.
