Biography of Charles Int Panis (English)

Charles Int Panis (also sometimes spelled as In’t Panis) was a Flemish 19th century painter who lived and worked in Antwerp (Belgium). Two of his sons were also painters.

Charles was born in Antwerp on 19 June 1844 as Joannes Franciscus Carolus Int Panis, son of a postman who had immigrated from Limburg. His father was already 53 at that time and 22 years older than his mother. When he is 5, his father and both his sisters die within one week, from cholera.

Nothing much is known about his early life years. A couple of small paintings on glass may be early works.

In 1864 he started courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp where he was the student of several well-know artists such as Frans-Andries Durlet (The neo-gothic architect and sculptor who led the 19th century restauration of the "Steen" and of the cathedral).

Charles continued his training in architectural drawing in 1867 when Prof. Durlet suddenly died.

In 1866 and in 1867 he achieved the second prize for his work. Het then continued his studies with Prof. Baekelmans until 1871.

According to the archives of the Academy he achieved an "honorable mention" for his exposition in 1868 and in 1869 he achieved the first prize.

He graduated from the Academy "cum Laude" and started his own company in the centre of Antwerp. His three sons all attended the Academy as well. Ernest In't Panis and Emiel In't Panis followed in his footsteps and became painters as well.
