New project on litter arthropods

We've just been notified that our 'Litter Arthropods of High Appalachia' grant (a collaboration with Paul Marek at Virginia Tech) has been funded! Will be recruiting a post-doc and a PhD student, and taking numerous trips to the nearby mountains, in the very near future. See the project page (link in sidebar) for more details

Arrivals and departures

I can't really ignore the fact that it's been over three years since the last update here. But now that that's been acknowledged... Roy Kucuk recently joined the lab as a Master's student, looking into the microbiome of the common cetoniine scarab Continus nitida. Roy's nearing the end of his second semester, and is making great progress. At the end of the summer we bid farewell to Dr. Sofia Muñoz. She graduated in August, and has moved back to Ecuador, where she continues to explore the arthropod biodiversity of the High Andes.

The real reason for this update is to point any visiting prospective students to the 'Opportunities' page, where I have advertised a new opening in the lab for Fall 2019. Support for the position will come through an curatorial assistantship working part-time in the Clemson University Arthropod Collection.

New people in and around the lab

This fall Laura Vásquez-Vélez will be joining the lab to do her Ph.D. work. Laura received her Master's degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaquez, having completed a remarkable project on Pselaphomorphus (Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae) that described 28 new species!

We also welcome Dr. Michael Ferro to Clemson. Mike will be starting September 1st as Collection Manager for the CU Arthropod Collection, helping to oversee our major renovation project. Mike completed his Ph.D. under Dr. Chris Carlton at Louisiana State University. Mike's research interests are diverse, but especially focus on the diversity of beetles in dead wood (and other relatively understudied microhabitats.

Improvements to the Clemson University Arthropod Collection

This morning we received final notification from the National Science Foundation that a project to upgrade the collections ("CSBR: Expanding the footprint and the reach of the Clemson University Arthropod Collection") has been fully approved!

A graduate collections assistant position is available to work on this project starting in Fall 2015 or Spring 2016. We are also recruiting a full-time (three-year) Collections Manager.

Welcome Dr. Shelley Myers

Dr. Shelley Myers has joined the lab as a postdoctoral fellow. Shelley made the long trek from New Zealand, where she received her Ph.D. studying walking sticks at the University of Auckland. Her project at Clemson will focus on the effects of land-use history on leaf litter beetle diversity in southern Appalachia. More info here: Shelley's lab page.

Renovations to the lab - nearly done

Although it has been a long road, the light at the end of the lab entry is fast approaching. Most of the infrastructure improvements are complete, and nearly all equipment is in place. It's about time to order some reagents and prepare for the ceremonial 1st PCR!

Renovations to the lab

The lab has now been taken down as far as it's going to go. The old benches are all gone. The ceiling is gone. The asbestos-laden floors are gone. Time for construction to begin. Here's a few pix showing progress:

Ground-breaking begins on the new lab

Following a slow start, and a lot of planning meetings, work has begun in earnest on the new lab. The last of the previous inhabitant's gear is being removed, and serious demolition of old benches, hoods, and sinks is underway (all day I've delighted to the sounds of sawing, hammering, grunting and cursing coming from the next room!) Finally I can look forward to my next PCR, and the lab's forthcoming students having a place to conduct their research.

Inaugural graduate students have been accepted

The lab's first official graduate students have been accepted into the Clemson Entomology graduate program. I can formally announce that Sofia Muñoz will be joining the lab this Fall to do her Ph.D. Hopefully another announcement can be made soon.

Have arrived in SC

The Caterino family made its way successfully across the US of A, and landed in Clemson, SC last weekend. MC has been overseeing the beginnings of lab and office renovations, and looks forward to occupying new space in the next couple weeks.

This weekend KC and MC will be attending a two-day symposium, 'Biodiversity Responses to Climate Change: Perspectives from the Southeastern US', at Eastern Carolina University'. Then Monday, St. Patrick's Day will be MC's first official day as a Clemson Professor. Very exciting.
