Land Records

Except where noted otherwise these records are based on a review of microfiche copies of the original records.

1782 John Briant, Sr. had 200 acres when they started the tax list [1] The location of this property is unknown. It could have been in the greater Rock Island Creek area or it might have been elsewhere (see discussion in the Appendix for the personal property tax lists)

1783 Warrant issued to John Bryant for 790 acres.

1788 Survey of 790 acres on Rock Island Creek completed for John Bryant

1791 John Bryant’s land grant for 790 acres appeared on tax rolls for first time along with his 200-acre tract

1797 John Bryant pays taxes for two tracts (200 and 790 acres)

1798 John Bryant pays taxes for two tracts (200 and 140). Anthony Bryant paid taxes on 500 acres with notation “Jno. B” to the side. Austin Bryant paid taxes for 150 with a notation by his name that is difficult to read

1798 John B. Bryant sold 150 acres of the 790 to Austin Bryant

1798 John B. Bryant sold 500 acres of the 790 to Anthony Bryant (John B. Bryant has 1 tract of 200 acres and 1 tract of 140 remaining.)

1799-1803 Need to locate and review original land tax records, if available

1806 Anthony Bryant sold 500 acres to Wilson Cary Nicholas

1807 John Bryant paid taxes on two tracts (200 & 140 acres); Austin paid for 150; and a smudged name (probably Anthony) paid for two tracts (90 acres & 161).

1808 No land tax records were kept (professional genealogist James Ward)

A survey of a rectangular 25 acres showed the name Austin Bryant (one of adjoining property owners is John Bryant) [2] A survey of a trapezoidal 10 acres said Anthony Bryant commissioned the survey and was an adjoining property owner

1809 One page of land tax record indicated that John was paying on two tracts (200 & 140 acres) and that Austin was paying for 150 acres. Another page had this notation: “Anthony Bryant & Jno Bryant & Austin B. No. acres not mentioned”

1809 John Bryant and Austin Bryant sold 175 Acres to Anthony Bryant

1810 Anthony and others sold 150 acres to William Bailey[3] Who are the “others”?

1811-12 John Bryant continued to pay taxes on 2 tracts: 200 &140 acres

1812 Austin Bryant paid taxes on 150 acres; Anthony Bryant on 175 acres

1813 Anthony Bryant Est. paid for 175 acres with notation “Rock Island non resident”;

1814 Rhoda Briant, widow of Anthony, executed power of attorney in Green Co, Ky, giving son William Price Briant power of attorney to sell 275 acres in Buckingham Co.

1814 John Bryant Est. had only 140 acres on Rock Island with notation “Deduction on the authority of Austin Bryant it being ch’d to the Est of Anthony Bryant Est.” Below that is another notation; it is not clear which land record it references: “the 7 tracts of land of 12 acres each that was charged to the Br…. is struck off it being… Jno Pal… on the south of Wm. Berryman

1815-6 John Bryant Est paid for 140 acres; Anthony Bryant Est. nonresident paid for 175.

1818 No listing for John, Austin, or Anthony Bryant

[1] See footnotes in Chapter 3, describing why the "Pow" or "Pon" next to his name in this record was probably an error.

[3] Elizabeth Bailey was the daughter of William Bailey Sr. of Buckingham Co. Per tax records, he appears to have had a son William Bailey Jr., who bought land in Buckingham from Anthony Bryant.
