Course Description:

Principles and applications of deterministic and statistical design; random processes in automatic control.


Required Text:

Readings from class notes, research papers and book chapters.


Topics and tentative schedule:

Week 1 (08/25/14). Preliminaries

Week 2-4 (09/01/14). Dynamic programming, Midterm #1 on 9/19/14

Week 5-7 (09/22/14). Linear dynamical systems and quadratic cost, LQR, Matlab programming assignment

Week 8-10 (10/15/14). Markov decision processes, POMDP, Midterm #2 on 10/31/14 (10/13/14 no class -- fall break)

Week 11-14 (11/03/14). Model predictive control, Matlab programming assignment (11/28/14 no class -- Thanksgiving)

Week 15 (12/01/14). Student project presentations

Final project reports are due by email by 12/03/14 before class.

Final exam is on Friday 12/05/14 during 10:30am-12:30pm


Evaluation and Final Grades:

Grading: Homeworks 20%, Midterms 15%+15%, Final 20%, Project 20%, Presentation 10%

The 7522 and 8522 sections will be graded separately. In each exam, the students enrolled for 8522 will have to answer one more question.
