Barbers of Gortarowey

James Barber was recorded in Gortarowey, Drumcliffe Parish, in the Diocese of Elphin Census of 1749. Based on Irish naming patterns, we believe that James had a son, Robert, born about 1740, who was listed in the Elphin census as one of the 3 children in 1749. William Barber of Gortarowey was born about 1761 and died 15 Dec. 1846. He was married to Jane about 1804. Descendants of William's son Samuel (and his son Samuel) went to Canada in 1860.

We are hoping that the Barber DNA Project will confirm the above descendancy. See sidebar.

Here is the family farm above at Gortarowey, now run by Joseph Barber. His siblings are George, Muriel and Ivy. His ancestors were:

William George Barber (1878-1960)

Joseph Barber (1845-1932)

Samuel Barber (1813-1895)

William Barber (1761-1846)

Robert Barber (1740?- ?)

James Barber (1720?- ?)

Below is the Sam and Ann Barber farm near Mansfield, Ontario. Sam (1837-1922) was a son of Samuel (1813-1895). He arrived in Ontario form Co. Sligo in 1860. They left this farm in 1890 to go west but it still stands in 2009.

Ivy W. Galbraith of Broadview, Saskatchewan wrote the story called "The Footsteps of Irish Pioneers Samuel and Ann Barber and their Ten Sons, 1837-1985". With permission, I will eventually include it in Attachments section below. Also see the 1901 Census, transcribed by Charlie Brown. The "Barber Flowchart" was provided by Robert Little of Hamilton, Ontario.
