Fritz’s artist statement:

“Without conscious effort, I have discovered a fascination with architectural detail as it impacts human culture. Truly, we design and occupy living spaces that become inseparable from our world-view and life style. The relationship between culture and architecture seems especially strong in the Southwest where Spanish, American and Native American experiences have created a style immediately recognizable throughout the world, a style that is so comfortable in its environment that it seems to grow out of the Earth. My interest in classical architecture has taken me to Greece (Santorini) and Spain.”

John’s artist statement:

“I use digital photography to tell a story with images. I am attracted to narrative compositions that include a strong sense of place and time. Some of favorite photos are from Umbria and from the ruins of Rome. Both places are filled with the culture and charm one would expect of ancient places. This collection of photographs includes images from recent trips to the upper Rhine Valley in both France and Germany.

Review of a Sakel/Kapraun ‘Double Vision’ show by Wilmington art critic Art Shuey:

‘It is daring and effective for a painter and photographer to display in tandem, as doing so inevitably leads viewers to see the best and worst of the media before considering what the artists bring to them. In short, painting allows the ideal; photography allows the moment. Seeing the two together challenges the painter to present the moment and the photographer to present the ideal.’

‘For both the painter and the photographer, it’s about the shot, usually straight on and honest, with some acknowledgment of visual center. This spot is often reserved for one item… an urn, a windmill, a brightly lit section of bridge or building… which shouts out a color radically different from the limited range in the rest of the work.’

‘You will want to touch the warm, whitewashed stucco walls of old buildings painted and photographed for this exhibit, and to sit on wide, white steps to lazily watch village life (below) and clouds (above) go by.’
