B.A. // M.A. Thesis

My area of work is Market Design. I study bilateral markets and their applications such as School Admission, College Admissions, and organ donation. I have done both theoretical and empirical analysis in this area, as you can see here.

You can see other examples of topics in this area here:

You can also find a summary of what is going on in this recent Conference of Prof. Alvin Roth in the EAA meetings:

And from Parag Pathak on Designing theories for the real world, also from the EAA website:

There are examples of analysis of European institutions here:

and proposals of hot topic (perhaps some too technical for a TFG/TFM) here:

Techniques for the design of markets are not difficult to acquire.

You can start by enrolling in my market design course, but even if you don't, you can do interesting stuff.

The basis for the analysis of these markets were given by Gale and Shapley (1962) where they considered a model when two sets of agents, for example, workers and firms, which must be matched. If there is a worker or a firm that prefer to be unmatched of a worker firm pair that prefer to be matched together better than with their current partners, the allocation is not stable. Gale and Shapley had the intuition that stability is a fundamental concept in these markets and presented a method to calculate them. This method is known as Gale and Shapley algorithm.

Alvin Roth (1984) highlighted the empirical relevance of this discovery, in particular, the algorithm proposed by Gale and Shapley was equivalent to that used for assigning medical residents to hospitals in the National Resident Matching Program (NMRP) in the United States. The reform of the school admission systems of multiple school districts and the allocation of kidneys from living donors are other examples of the application of Market Design. There are many more applications and its number increases every day. You might start by looking at:

If you have got this far and would like to do your B.A. or Master Thesis on a topic related to Market Design, think of a project and send me a detailed proposal.

For example, in 2021 I have advised TFGs in the following topics:

  • Volunteer motivation in food banks.

  • Airbnb regulation: impact in BCN.

  • Course allocation procedures at UC3M.

And TFMs on:

  • The market for water in Chile.
