Outreach

I am fascinated by the polar regions and polar sciences, and I like to share my enthusiasm through various outreach activities. As such, I have (co-)organised various workshops and panels at conferences and in the local communities, communicated my science via websites, blogs, interviews, and talks, and have acted as chief scientist on two youth expeditions with the British Schools Exploring Society to northern Norway and Svalbard. As PhD student and as postdoc, I was actively involved in the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS, see further down for more info!) and have helped developing science outreach and communication through various APECS projects like the Virtual Poster Session. Below are some examples of outreach on the internet.

APECS and the UK Polar Network

APECS (the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists) is an international and interdisciplinary organisation for students at all levels, post-docs and early faculty members with an interest in polar regions. Main aims of APECS are "to stimulate interdisciplinary and international research collaborations, and develop effective future leaders in polar research, education and outreach". Check out the website (http://apecs.is) to find out more!

UKPN, the UK Polar Network, is the UK branch of APECS and one of the most active national groups. UKPN organises networking and career development as well as education and outreach opportunities.

In the past, I have been involved in UKPN as funding coordinator and member of the UKPN committee. I was member of the APECS council and from Oct. 2010 to Sep. 2012, I served on the APECS Executive Committee. I am currently on the board of APECS Norge. The work with UKPN and APECS has been incredibly rewarding, both for my professional development and network, and for making friends around the world. If you are interested in finding out more about APECS or would like to join as member or become a mentor, visit the website or get in touch via info@apecs.is!
