About the Libraries

MISSION
The mission of the Albia Community School District Libraries is to support school curriculum and enable all students to:
  • appreciate and enjoy literature
  • be effective users of information
  • be life-long learners

POLICIES
These are the general policies of the district libraries.  Click on a school's name at the top of the page to read about its specific policies.
  • The number of books a student may have checked out at a time varies by school.
  • The circulation period, or amount of time a student may have items checked out, varies by school.
  • A book may be renewed 2 times as long as no one else has requested it.
  • Overdue notices will be sent home with students periodically.
  • Students with an overdue book may check out one additional item. However, if it has been overdue for more than two circulation periods, no additional items will be checked out to the student.
  • A replacement cost will be assessed for lost or damaged materials. If the lost book is found and returned in good condition within the same school year it was lost, a full refund will be given.
  • Students who habitually lose books and do not pay for them will be limited to using books only in the libraries.

CURRICULUM
Yes, libraries are about books and reading, but they're also about teaching students how to find, use, and evaluate information -- information literacy skills.
LIBRARY PROGRAM
Due to various staffing levels across the district, there are both fixed and flexible schedules within the ACSD library program. These schedules allow for students to connect with literature and information and check out library materials. The schedules also allow for students to learn information literacy skills -- the ability to recognize a need for information and to access, evaluate, and use information effectively -- through instruction with the certified teacher-librarian, Mrs. Seddon.

Students are encouraged to visit their library as often as they can when there is appropriate supervision. We want everyone to enjoy all kinds of literature!

EXPECTATIONS
All users of ACSD Libraries (students, school employees, library staff, and visitors) are expected to:
  • be productive
  • be quiet
  • be respectful
  • be responsible
  • be safe
Library users who do not meet these expectations may be asked to leave the library. They are welcome to return to the library at another time when they have the opportunity to try again.
