Group Leader, Professor Angel Cuesta

Prof. Angel Cuesta graduated from the University of Zaragoza in 1992, and obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 1996. After finishing his PhD, he enjoyed three years (two of them with the support of a Marie Curie Training and Mobility of Researchers Fellowship) as a postdoctoral fellow in the group of the late Prof. D.M. Kolb at the University of Ulm (Germany). In July 2001 he was selected as Provisional Staff Scientist at the Institute of Physical Chemistry “Rocasolano” (CSIC) in Madrid, where he was promoted to Staff Scientist in December 2002. He was promoted to the Senior Scientist scale of CSIC in March 2010, and was appointed as Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen (UK) in July 2013, where he was promoted to Reader in August 2016 and to Personal Chair in August 2018. He received the CIDETEC prize for scientific research 2006. He was awarded a Visiting Professorship at the Catalysis Research Centre of Hokkaido University (Sapporo, Japan) in 2007, and has been a visiting professor at the Federal University of Sao Carlos (UFSCAR, Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo,Brazil) between November 2013 and November 2016. Prof. Cuesta was the Interim Head of School of the School of Natural and Computing Sciences, which, in addition to Chemistry, also includes the disciplines of Physics, Mathematics and Computing Science, between 1 October 2021 and 31 August 2022.

Prof. Cuesta's research is essentially of experimental nature, and focuses on fundamental aspects of interfacial electron transfer, structure of the electrical double layer, and electrocatalysis. Other research areas of activity are corrosion and metal electrodeposition. Methodologically, Prof. Cuesta's research is characterised by the combination of classical electrochemical techniques with non-electrochemical techniques that can provide, in situ, information about the chemical nature of species present at the electrode-electrolyte interface or about the structure, at the atomic scale, of the electrode surface. These techniques include, but are not limited to, vibrational and optical spectroscopies, and high-resolution scanning probe microscopy (STM and AFM).

Prof. Cuesta is a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry (Elsevier) and of Electrochemical Science Advances (Wiley). He served as Chair Elect of Division 7 (Physical Electrochemistry) of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) between January 2017 and December 2018, as Chair between January 2019 and December 2020 and as the immediate past-Chair since January 2021.
