TEXT
COMPILED BY CHRISTOPHER WHITE & KAREL G. BOON
A. L. VAN GENDT & CO NV
AMSTERDAM 1969
LOCCCN 77-78407
LANDSCAPE WITH A COTTAGE AND HAYBARN : OBLONG
B225 G.217 M.306 H.177 Mz.147 B.B.41-A
Etching. 12.9 x 32.1
Signed and dated : Rembrandt f 1641
Amsterdam* (Boon 164), Berlin, Cambridge, Frankfurt, Haarlem, Leningrad (R.609), London (Mz.163; White 294), New York P.M.L.,
Oxford, Paris,, Paris Dutuit, Paris Rothschild, Vienna.
Early impressions are stronger in the right hand background, possibly indicating that Rembrandt
may later have lightly burnished this area.
Counterproofs in Cambridge, London, Paris.
Seidlitz described an earlier state on the basis of an impression ( Artaria coll., sale Amsler and Ruthard, Berlin , 17 October 1905, no.1135)
supposedly taken from a higher plate (14.2 x 32.19).
The view on the left is probably based on Amsterdam, while the house in the trees on the right probably represents the house of Kostverloren on the River Amstel (see J. Six, in Oud Holland, 1909 [XXVII] p. 96). Van Regteren Altena ( Oud Holland, 1954 [LXIX] p. 13),
on the other hand, considered that this house might represent Uytenbogaert's house, 'Het Torentje', near Amsterdam.
