Cooperative Learning
(It's about more than just group work...)
(It's about more than just group work...)
Teachers who use cooperative learning begin to relax and enjoy their students more. More time can be spent on facilitating knowledge and positive academic interactions with students as team leaders are tasked to do the micromanagement.
Cooperative learning is a teaching strategy in which small teams use a variety of learning abilities to improve their understanding of a subject. Strategies can be used both in pairs and groups and are designed to fulfill all of the following principles:
Positive interdependence
Individual accountability
Equal participation
Simultaneous interaction
Each student in the group is expected to contribute using interpersonal skills and face-to-face interaction. Students also participate in regular assessment of the group process. An effective cooperative learning environment incorporates numerous cross-disciplinary skills such as:
Critical thinking
Problem solving
Creativity
Communication
In order to successfully implement this methodology into the classroom, one must know their students and have a clear understanding of which of their students are leaders, followers, and who struggles. This knowledge pays tremendous dividends in the future as general classroom management shifts from being teacher-driven to student-centered. In this environment all students can become more productive, independent, and effective learners.
Jeff Mccormick, Teacher -- Phoenix
Phoenix, our North County middle school site, through the Santa Cruz County (CA) Office of Education’s Alternative Education department, serves an eclectic student population (grades 6-8) as students come to us for a variety of concerns.
Our philosophy at Phoenix is to provide opportunities for students to increase their literacy, develop their ethics, and create a sense of personal empowerment. We want students to feel pride in their daily academic progress, we want to engage students in topics of empathy and equity, and we want to have students investigate their interests while developing skills to become life-long learners In the simplest terms, after providing a physical space that is safe and respectful, our staff's job is to make students feel "smart, good, and ready".
We are dedicated to implementing a cooperative learning model at Phoenix. Given our population of learners, we are proud to implement cooperative learning in our classroom community as its attributes have been shown to help students feel more comfortable in a school setting than almost any other teaching methodology. From the earliest research to the most recent, documented results of the benefits of cooperative learning include:
academic achievement
improved behavior and attendance
increased self-confidence and motivation
increased liking of school and classmates
