Final Project Journal
Project Ideation
1- Tell us about the idea of your project. Why do you care about this? What were you inspired by? Include images and videos of similar projects
the final project is a safe !! but with some fancy features and cool effects.
the project in concept looks simple...but trust me it's not I promise
I faced a problem that may be faced you either ,its chocolate disappearing phenomenon ( which caused by younger siblings in the most cases ) so I searched for something to solve this problem
I found this mesmerizing mechanism
(bulley expanding mechanism ) and decided to use it in my project.
the safe was made with passkey that make a specific frequency so when you insert the key it senses if its right passkey or not and opens with some welcoming lights and satisfying mechanical sounds
Project Construction
2- Explain the CAD process of your project. How did you use the software to design your project? (List the softwares/tools/materials...etc that you used)
firstly let me introduce to you the softwares I've used in the design process
inkscape
Grabcad
fusion 360
illustrator
the design process
I draw some hand sketching to empty my mind and be visible to others also.
then started cad design based on sketch dimensions shown above (version 1) using fusion 360 software
in this version 1, there were some problems with the design
some of them were the efficiency it was too large and weight more than my quota can cover and probably would be fragile if printed in this shape so I redesigned it but with the same concept (hexagonal box ) and added some features to it

version 2 design
in version 2 I decided to make the sides from plywood and print only the top, and bottom of the safe,
and the mechanism also to reduce the used plastic in 3d printing process,
separated sides from each other in design to be jointed later after the fabrication to be stronger
but still have some more to upgrade!!
in version 3 and the last one I added and upgraded more and more in the design to be better and more suitable and good looking
first canceled the idea of t slots and plastic sides
added clearance to all mechanisms and moving or sliding parts
added a small extrude like a ring inward to prevent the lid from falling into the safe
made cuts to the upper base to make it lighter for easier 3d printing and more complex design and fancier product
created angles from zero specially for this safe the first angle printed like this I guess !! (using threaded inserts)
added a pattern to the rotating ring for an artistic touch
added slots to fit two servo motors for movement
and for the history lovers and architects, the safe made with gothic theme
finally design version 3
those some of the components of the project
3- Explain the fabrication process of your project. How did you use the machine to fabricate your project? (List the softwares/tools/materials...etc that you used)
prusa mk3 printer
cura slicer
laser cutting machine
soldering station
fabricating phase
first I cut a prototype to test the functionality of my mechanism and design.....and as I hoped it worked properly
testing phase
started cutting the project after testing it with prototype
that's me after cutting and working with my tired eyes
the top base and top ring printing
great fittings, so don't forget!
Project Electronics & Power Management
4- Describe your electronic circuit. What are the input and action components? What is the function of each? How do the components integrate together to form your smart system? (List the softwares/tools/components...etc that you used)
my circuit contains 2 servos
neopixel ring
2 LDR modules
list of components :
LDR
servo motors
lm7805
arduino nano
adapter 9v
neopixel ring 16led
the circuit should work as follow:
first the LDRs are for inputs when LDR 1 detect a signal from passkey it sends a signal to Arduino then LDR 2 when it blacked out says it's turned off so when the two conditions are covered the Arduino rotates servo 1 to unlock rotating movement and rotate servo 2 to rotate the whole upper cylinder to unlock the safe, then lights up the led ring to make a pleasing and colorful lights
5- What is your power source? How did you select the suitable power source for your project? (List the softwares/tools/components...etc that you used)
used tinkercad to tinker my circuit and spot if there any issues in it
the power was a 9v power supply or higher with a 5v voltage regulator
the reason I used a 9V adapter is that the Arduino can't power all those components at once as it has limited current so I used an external power source independently to power the electronics and the Arduino to, by that way it can work without any laptop or pc attached just the adapter or any external power supply
I used 9v or higher to power my project, adding lm7805 voltage regulator to limit the voltage
all connections were parallel
Project Programming
6- Describe the code of your project. How did you program each function of the project?
BEFORE VOID SETUP :
include all the needed libraries and set variables to be easier in the next steps as a programmer
VOID SETUP:
set pins for servos and LDRs and neopixel ring
serial print for showing the values of the input signal from passkey, and set it later as the official pass signal
void loop:
now the important part
set on time, off time and period to measure signal hertz and duty cycle
now to if condition:
if the frequency of the signal lower than 1000 then (print it on serial monitor and go to another if in it to see if the signal in the range of the passkey right or no if right open the safe and unlock rotation lock also light up the led, if not close the safe, turn off the lights and lock the rotation
Project Integration & Testing (fun time)
7- Demonstrate with text and visuals how did you integrate the project’s modules together? What are the testing results? (Include a Demo video separately, showing a proof of functionality)
then inserted the pins that lock the lid
fixing the wood to the sides in the threaded inserts
testing the colors that I want and patterns
first good fitting that showed me how genius I am hahaha
adding the threaded inserts to upper ring
working with the best in this workspace.....say hi to Mohanad in the background
programming/testing electronics before mounting into the body
threaded inserts insertion
testing lid functionality
Sharing & Collaboration
8- Did you ask for feedback? What are the ideas that others have contributed or suggested? What was someone else’s idea that you built upon? How did you help your peers? How did your peers help you?
once upon a time doaa brought to us the best متدلعة ever from it's original home (tanta ) and that was the best gift in the diploma till now ....i thank her a lot and I will thank her more and more
a short walk to Tahrir square (the heart of the capital )
and that beautiful day when I made new friends and met all of them for the first time... was a great day to remember
Overcoming Challenges
9- When you got stuck, what/who did you turn to? At what point did you have to pause to research or learn more before moving on? What are some mistakes, pitfalls, or challenges that others can avoid if they were doing this project?
the biggest problem I had was t-slots, I hate t-slots and was making my project looks awful and lacking a good appearance
so I created a new way to connect parts with less effort and easier to make
another problem that faced me and was Arduino wasn't responding at any condition
I tried all methods such as port, processor, and so on but didn't work
disabled the port and enabled it
and finally I tried one last thing updating the drivers of my pc and that was the problem so always check for updates and be up to date
cad and laser cutting problem was when exporting a dxf. file from fusion that contains splines or curves it exports with lines can be deleted with the editor plug-in in fusion, but in my case that didn't work.
so I took a screenshot and traced it with Inkscape and exported it to dxf and scaled it to the right dimensions in the laser work program
Future Work
10- If you had more time, what is one thing you would change/ Do next in your project?
I would make a case or enclosure for the passkey to be more compact and look nicer,
also, add a magnet to it to snap to its position automatically and smoothly like my earbuds.
I would add more patterns to the neopixel to be more pleasant to the eyes
