Week 02 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

I have an obsession with elephants, Therefore, when I had the chance to do something, I prefer it to be an elephant shape. So, I made the mobile holder looks like an elephant. Then, I wanted to take more advantage of the mobile holder, so I combined it with a pen holder.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

1- I searched for the design I preferred, then started sketching on paper the dims and the desired shape.

2- It then should be designed using cardboard but I didn't have time. Therefore, I designed it using fusion and made the assembly there.

3- Then it should be exported into a dxf file to be imported into laser works to be then printed on the laser cutter.

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

The steps

1- I designed the mobile holder on paper,

2- then I used 3 different sketches to make the front, side and bottom.

3- I made components through extrusion, and then duplicated the front and side.

4- I started to assemble the joints.

5- I found one mistake on the front side of the assembly, and then I modified it.

6- when the assembly is done and correct, I exported the dxf files.

7- I took them to laser works.

Fusion drawing Steps

The steps

1- I began with sketching the elephant front by drawing a rectangle from the origin point to begin the fully defined sketch. then started to measure the remaining design dimensions. I used the mirroring to ensure the full definition. I used the coincidence and tangent constraints.

Then I started to design the sides to be compatible with the front face in terms of the t-slots. I reached the full definition by modelling half of the shape along 2 fixed perpendicular construction lines that worked as centerlines and then mirroring them.

Then I drew the bottom using the same constraints.

2- After that, the extrusion tool is used to make the sketches 2.5D. I extruded the front view by 3mm like the plywood thickness as a component. then duplicated the component. I made the same to the side. Finally, the bottom was extruded as a component.

3- The third part was to do the assembly using the joints. It was about choosing the right surface to do the joint.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

In order to print the mobile holder, I imported the dxf files into laser work and duplicated the front and side parts and organised them into laser work files, then, I went to the lab and the lab specialist welcomed me. Then the steps went as follow:

1- the fab lab specialist checked the file layers, and he changed the speed of the cut to be maximum of 15 and power 70 instead of 65 degrees and the scan to be speed of 200 and power 35

2- I sent the file to the printer, and the fab specialist helped me to adjust the focus of the nozzle by moving the bed up and down.

3- He told me how to adjust the horizontality of the sheets by the focusing dots.

4- Then I set the origin point and make a track frame and time estimation of the object.

5- Then, I chose the file and let the laser cutter begin printing.

6- The printed pieces took almost 9 mins to be printed.

7- Finally, I gave the printer to my colleague to print.

8- After printing, I began the assembly of the parts. Firstly, I found difficulty in joining the pieces together, but after trials, I was able to assemble them.

Overcoming Challenges

What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)

My challenge was the full definition of the curves themselves. In the beginning, I tried to make it by myself but I didn't succeed. Therefore, I asked the help of Amany who was very helpful and we could reach a fully defined sketch through trials.

The full definition is done on curves by putting dimension that locks the radius of the arch and the starting points themselves. These dimensions are from the arch itself and the previously fixed point.

First Challenge

Another challenge was the real assembly of the mobile holder. It was hard to assemble some slots due to the exact dimensions. I got help from my friend in the lab.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

This week is very helpful, In case of having a different assembled parts using t slots and screws.
