GALLERY OWNERS PROGRAM

       PORTLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Do you love to paint or draw?  Do you have a collection of things that you have been collecting for some time?  Do you have a friend who you enjoy collaborating with?  Do you want to share this part of yourself with others?  If the answer is yes then apply for the Gallery Owners Program!

Who? – The Gallery Owners Program is open to current 7th or 8th graders of Portland Middle School

What? – Put up a display for all to see and participate in a Gallery Opening just like a real Art Gallery. It is expected that you will be able to talk about your display at the opening.  The writing that you do will help with this.

When? – You will work with Ms. Szerejko to pick the days that you will use for setup, create the Opening, and break down of the exhibit.

Where? – Almost Anywhere!  Look around the school.  There are display cases, bulletin boards, empty wall space, windows, and other spaces that might be suitable for your display.

How? -  Fill out an application form and submit it to Ms. Szerejko for approval.  Let’s see what you can do.

The Gallery Owners Program is an opportunity for interested students to create their own display and experience some of the tasks involved in selecting and presenting works for an art exhibition.  Approved Gallery Owners will curate their own exhibition using their own work or collections.  One of the tasks performed by museum and gallery curators is designing exhibitions, which can involve deciding themes, selecting artworks, and thinking carefully about where they are displayed for both visual and thematic reasons.  Curators are also responsible for writing exhibition descriptions and object labels to accompany each work.  Students will be asked to write a descriptive and interpretive material to accompany their exhibition.   Approved Gallery Owners will be responsible for creating and displaying the work, including creating invitations to the Opening.

Questions? – see Ms. Szerejko               Link to application
