About Me

My route to becoming a teacher was shaped by my personal experiences. I arrived to the USA when I was 10 years old. Right away I encountered English as a barrier in my education. As I went through my academic journey, I became aware of the difference between of social and academic English, and learned that a grade or GPA does not quantify what each individual learns, knows and is capable of accomplishing in life.

After graduating with a B.A. in Community Development I embarked in my professional journey that exposed me to diverse professional opportunities ranging from community development, urban planning, community organizing, after school coordinator, and non-profit work. However, I was not satisfied with my professional career, and decided to embark in a new journey. I left the USA to pursue a M.Sc. in Urban Agglomerations at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. During my time in the graduate program I was exposed to two new languages and cultures (German and Brazilian Portuguese). After cultivating a master thesis that focused on urban agriculture/farming. I continued my journey in the world and lived in Malaysia where I worked as a K-12 projects and facilities coordinator, and then had lived in in Doha, Qatar for almost a year.

When I returned to Portland, Oregon, I felt out of place professionally and socially. However, the teaching career kept on following me, like a friendly shadow companion. When I decided to venture to the world of teaching, I noticed that my passion for social and environmental justice, as well as my love for learning new languages, culture, traditions, customs, are important attributes that are rooted in teaching. My hope is to teach more than the school subject areas. My hope is to also enrich the lives of students so they can believe in themselves, have a global mindset and be capable of being immersed and interact with any individual in the world.

Hola a todos/as ustedes,

¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Anuario Escolar, Literatura en español y Ciencias Sociales! I am excited to welcome all of you to your Spanish DLI Language Arts and Social Studies, and Yearbook class.

I am excited to be back for in-person classes for the 2022-2023 school year! It seems like the global pandemic of COVID-19 is a thing of the past. Nevertheless, people are still being impacted, that's why it is important that support individuals that want or need to take precautionary measures.

My hope is that all of us can cultivate a classroom environment that kindles curiosity, engagement, motivation, friendships, mutual, value and respect, accountability, and last but not least a fun and celebratory environment. Cultivating this classroom environment or community will require all of our efforts but I truly believe that it is possible. Before I provide some information about our first two weeks of class, I want to share with y’all my Flipgrid presentation (please view below) that I created for the 2020 Dual Language Immersion Teacher Residency program. My hope is that through the presentation y’all can know a bit more about me, why I decided to become a teacher, and what I hope to contribute.

As we commence this new school year, it will be important for all of you to bookmark your My.PPS Portal, as we may utilize some of the following platforms:

-Canvas: To post our class presentations, and practicas (practice work).

-Synergy: To track the grades.

-Remind: To send any messages pertaining to attendance.

-Google Classroom: For any virtual meetings and conversations.

-Google Calendar: To create meetings, and provide reminders for classes.

-Google Drive: To send any electronic files or practicas.

During the first two weeks, we will be getting to know each other by participating in activities, talking with each other, and sharing our thoughts and ideas about our classroom agreements. Additionally, I will create a space for a virtual 1 on 1 conversation with you and your caregivers so we can chat about other items that you think are important for me to know as well as know what are your personal expectations.

In addition to being a teacher, I am a member of our Beaumont Middle School and of our Portland community. Thus if there is anything that you think I can assist or support y’all with, please do not hesitate to contact me. We all need to support each other more than ever!

Thank you for taking the time to read this email, I look forward to hearing from y’all!
