How might my child experience school counseling services at OPA Elementary?

Classroom Counseling Lessons - These lessons provide a developmental and preventive approach. Teachers may make specific requests based on what they think students in their classrooms need most. At this point the school counselor schedules time to address personal, social, academic, and career-related needs at the students grade level. Topics may include self-esteem, character education, positive school behaviors and bullying. In addition, the students learn about the 7 Habits of Highly Effective people by Stephen Covey.

For Small Group Counseling - A teacher or the principal can suggest group counseling based on students experiencing similar issues and concerns. These students will work together in a small group environment consisting of about 6 to 8 peers. These group sessions usually last about 30 minutes and will meet on a regular basis out of non-core classes. Permission forms will be sent home to let parents know what the topic is and what the goals are. Parents have the option of allowing their child to participate or decline the invitation to the small group. Some of the topics include: coping skills to understand and deal with divorce, grief process, friendship, social and study skills, conflict resolution, anger and stress management, and building a good self-esteem.

For Individual Counseling – Students can be referred by their parents, teachers, or principal. Students themselves can also request to see the counselor. The student and counselor will work in a safe, positive, and confidential setting. This setting is conducive for students to feel free to address specific issues that worry them and that interfere with achieving success. The students will learn strategies to help them overcome their challenges. Topics are based on the needs of each student and may include: understanding and dealing with feelings, changing families dinamics, peer pressure, friendship issues, stress, social and academic skills, bullying, and decision-making.
