Self-Inventory of Required Competencies? What are the "competencies?" See below to find out.
Before you begin your application, do an inventory of your skills. Be really honest with yourself. We provide you with a list of the competencies required for all Prequalified Principal Candidates. It might be helpful to sit with your supervisor or a mentor leader and ask for help evaluating your readiness.
Use the link below to see the competencies you need to possess. While this inventory is not a part of the application, it can help YOU decide how ready you are.
Part 1: the application
The first step in our hiring process is an initial screening of all applicants to the pool. If your application does not contain one or more of the items below, it will not be considered. If one or more of the items is incomplete or if you do not adhere to the guidelines for all parts of the application, it will not be considered.
When you apply to a position, you are asked to REVIEW your profile and ATTACH documents. It is important that you do both; ensure that your profile includes the most updated information, AND that you attach all required documents in the correct format.
Letter of Interest with the impact of your leadership clearly evidenced and aligned to the competencies
Updated resume with the impact of your leadership clearly evidenced and aligned to the competencies
Reference letter from your current supervisor (SENT DIRECTLY TO adminstaffing@mcpsmd.org) that includes the following;
details pertaining to the impact of your leadership as outlined in the competencies
specific information regarding the impact of your leadership on student achievement and teacher capacity
data and concrete examples demonstrating your impact
Evidence of your master's degree
Scanned copy of your MSDE Administrator II certification (or the comparable certificate for your state), EVEN IF THE MCPS CERTIFICATION OFFICE HAS A COPY
Two years successful experience as an assistant principal
One current artifact demonstrating evidence of effective leadership and aligned to the competencies
Note: Evidence to show the impact of the candidate's leadership in the above competencies must be referenced in the resume, interest letter, and reference.
A special note for current MCPS employees; If an official transcript conferring an additional degree and/or admin certification have not already been submitted to the MCPS Certification Unit, please do so now.
Your letter
The letter, addressed to Ms. April L. Key, must include the following information:
An example of how your leadership has impacted student achievement
An example of how you have built teacher capacity that resulted in improved teaching and learning experiences for students
Data and concrete examples to support your claims
Your resume
Your resume must outline your strengths in competencies.
Data points used to support your leadership experience are required.
Include a list of 3 references in your resume.
The resume should not exceed two pages, and there is no required format.
Your recommendation
Solicit a recommendation from your current supervisor, If you have only been in your current position for less than six months, you may ask your former principal/supervisor to be your primary reference. You may not, however, submit an old recommendatio letter for a different position. Your supervisor must specifically address the work you have done that is aligned to the competencies and the impact of that work. Your recommendation letter must be submitted directly to adminstaffing@mcpsmd.org from the individual writing the references.
Your artifact
When we use the word "artifact" in the PQP application, we mean "work product." It is evidence of the competencies in your work.
What is an Artifact? What Isn't?
Artifact is a combination of two Latin words, arte, meaning "by skill" and factum which means "to make." Usually when you use the word artifact, you are describing something crafted that was used for a particular purpose during a much earlier time *
Essentially, the ONE artifact you submit illustrate the "best" version of you as an instructional leader. Most importantly, your artifact must be AUTHENTIC, CURRENT and demonstrate YOUR leadership. You "made them...by your skill."
So what is an artifact, literally? In many cases it is part of a slide presentation you used for a specific purpose, but your impact as a leader could be demonstrated in an overview and analysis of an equity initiative you led, achievement data and the corresponding data analysis, or a professional development plan for a teacher you supported, and on which some results are evident.
The panel with whom you interview will also be reviewing your artifact. Therefore, make sure you consider your audience. Lengthy slide shows are quite possibly less effective than images of two or three slides that accompany a concise telling of why you did the work you did, and how your work impacted children. Your panel will need some context to understand the relevance of each artifact, but they do not have an hour to review them.
Some broad topics to consider;
improvement of teaching and learning
school culture and climate
social emotional well-being
systemic initiatives
equity
school and office operations
pupil services
Guiding questions to consider;
What was your goal in initiating the work and why?
What was your role in the work?
What qualitative or quantitative data shows that you made a difference?
What did you learn and what would you do differently?
