Mrs. Svigel's Language Arts Class

SUMMER READING - Students were to read any 2 books over the summer, fiction or nonfiction. Then they choose from any of these Reading Activity choices (click here) to show their thinking. While students can turn it in on the very first day of school, they are also welcome to have another week to get it completed - no pressure! I just want to see how you think about and process your books. Summer reading info can also be found on the main Newton website as well as in the Registration information section.

About Mrs. Svigel

I earned my bachelor's degree in History and Secondary Education from Metropolitan State College of Denver in 2004. I completed my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction in February 2009 and am highly qualified in Language Arts. I am thrilled that this is my 17th year to teach at Newton, and I so love being here. Teaching middle school is my passion - I truly enjoy these crazy middle years! For many students this is, no doubt, an awkward age, but it is also one of tremendous growth and self-discovery. For these reasons, I love to come to work every day and strive to provide kids with new learning, a strong sense of value and worth, and the ability to grow in a positive environment.

I love walking the High Line Canal with my sons, Gavin and Gage, and we often run into familiar faces! We are outdoor explorers and love to paddleboard. I enjoy finding new, but easy recipes, going to lunch with friends, searching for a night out with my husband, and hanging out with my boys every day.

Opt In / Opt Out Procedures for Challenging and Controversial Topics

Please be assured that I only choose reading materials and content that are age-appropriate for 6th grade students. I also only choose novels that are district approved for this grade. However, all teachers should build parent awareness of classroom materials and make them aware of the opt in / opt out procedures.  I continually send emails throughout the school year including class updates and information about the texts we read. Click the link above for more district information.

General Class Information

Homework:  Students should read for 20-30 minutes 4 days each week in their book of choice. Often times students will also work on a writing piece at home to revise, edit or turn into a final draft. Other than that, we have very little homework. We are also so busy outside of school and kids deserve downtime as well!

Enrichment and Extra Support: I will provide enrichment for students when a skill is mastered quickly, as well as offer more challenging material as an added option for many assignments. All students will also have extra support whenever needed. Quick fixes can be accomplished together during class, or if needed, I will assist them for more in-depth instruction during Knight Time.

Parent Portal/Infinite Campus: It shows all of the graded assignments. Included with some assignments, you can find a "note" about the assignment, the requirement, or explanation of grade.
