Sports shsm requirements

LEADS is a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program focused on the sports-sector.

In order to earn their Sports SHSM through LEADS, students complete the requirements listed below in their Grade 11 and 12 years.

All of these requirements can be met through any of the three program pathways: Athletic Development, Outdoor Leadership, Sports Leadership.

LEADS Sports SHSM program Requirements:

  • 2 Credit Co-op placement in a sport related sector

  • 4 Major Credits (Phys-ed, Science, Business, Arts, Tech, etc)

  • 1 Math (grade 11 or 12)

  • 1 English (grade 11 or 12)

  • 1 Required Business Studies, Science, or Social Science

  • 3 mandatory certifications

  • 3 elective certifications

  • Participating in experiential learning and career exploration activities

  • Participating in "reach ahead" experiences

Mandatory Certifications

  • CPR

  • Standard First Aid

  • WHMIS

Elective Certifications

  • Making Headway - Concussion Awareness

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Making Ethical Decisions (MED)

  • High Five Certifications

  • NCCP Coaching Levels

  • Officiating

  • Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders

  • Safe Talk Training

  • Wrap and Taping for Injury

Experiential Learning and Career Exploration Activities:

Examples include:

  • one-on-one observation of a cooperative education student at a placement in the sports sector (an example of job twinning)

  • a day-long observation of an employee in the sports sector

  • a one- or two-week work experience with a member of an industry association or a professional in the sector

  • a volunteer experience at a community sports facility or at a professional sports team event

  • an experience coaching an elementary school student or team in an extracurricular activity

  • participation in an exercise class at a fitness facility

  • a tour of an athletic facility

  • attendance at a sports sector career fair


Reach Ahead Experiences:

LEADS students are provided one or more reach ahead experiences – opportunities to take the next steps along their chosen pathway – as shown in the following examples:

  • Apprenticeship: visiting an approved apprenticeship delivery agent in the sector

  • College: interviewing a college student enrolled in a sector-specific program, dual credit courses

  • University: observing a university class in a sector-related program

  • Workplace: interviewing an employee in the sector
