General Focus Skills

Asking Questions - Everyone has questions. Some questions come from needing clarity on a topic. Some questions might come from curiosity wanting to know more about a topic. Some questions might be open ended and promote discussion. Whatever type or reason, questions promote learning. I focus on this skill because when students are confused about something: I want them to ask for clarity to help them understand. I want them to ask follow up questions to help them learn more about the topic. I want them to ask probing questions to promote discussion where students can work with their peers to find the answers.

Self Advocate - I want students to feel confident and supported. When students feel like they can reach out to others when they need help, or want suggestions, or want to lend a helping hand to someone, they will naturally become a part of something great. Advocating can be scary at times, but it is a vital skill in navigating the world around us. We all have something great to offer the world, and self advocacy will be the key to sharing that brilliance.

Collaboration - Working with people is unavoidable. In all walks of life you will find yourselves working in pairs, groups, and teams. The ability to work with others will challenge you to deal with conflict, problem solve, and innovate. Collaboration is a huge focus at HTMNC, and the people skills that come along with collaboration will be something that students use forever.
