About Our ENL Program

Welcome to our ENL program at Burns Avenue! My name is Mrs. Roth and I work with the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade ENL students in our school. I work in the classrooms along with your child's classroom teacher to support all students in their language skills. We spend most of our time together reading and writing while developing listening and speaking skills.

Each of our ENL students have qualified for services upon entrance to New York State schools. When another language is spoken in the home, students are screened and given the NYSITELL (New York State Identification of English Language Learners). This assessment determines a students' English proficiency level: Exanding, Transitioning, Emerging, and Entering. All ENL students receive ENL instruction within their classroom. Students at the Transitioning, Emerging, and Entering levels receive an additional period of instruction in the ENL classroom daily.

Each spring, the ENL students take the NYSESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test). This assessment determines a students' English proficiency level for the following school year: Commanding, Expanding, Transitioning, Emerging, and Entering.
