About

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OUR LIBRARY:

Our Library strives to be a "Learning Commons*" that is, a place to teach our students lifelong learning skills. In part, it is a collaborative learning model that hopes to diminish the "walls" between our library and the classroom. Besides fostering the love of reading, the library curriculum supports information and digital literacies. s

Most important, the Learning Commons seeks to teach students to "learn how to learn." From the youngest age, we want students to learn how to:

This website supports our very busy students, teachers, and parents by connecting them to class research projects, resources, tutorials, links, and online reading. Our online reading databases, as well as our reference databases, are available to students 24/7.

Of course, READING is a part of the Learning Commons, both in the Physical Library and the Virtual Website! We encourage the LOVE of reading by allowing students to choose any books they want to read (within reason). The library houses  excellent print and digital collections. We welcome author visits - sponsored by our PTA - and skype visits, too! We also do literature based activities with other schools in other parts of the country via skype. The library collection supports the Teacher's College Curriculum.

As the year progresses, look for examples of STUDENT WORK, on our Student Space page! It will become apparent that our Virtual Library-Technology Learning Commons is a COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP between students, teachers, and specialists!

Herricks School Libraries Vision Statement:

The Herricks School Libraries are at the hub of each school, reaching into every classroom as well as into students’ homes. Based on the research findings of the recent New York State Regents Advisory Council, Information Brief: The Impact of School Libraries on Student Achievement, (August, 2011), “it is clear that with the shift to the Common Core Standards and a commitment to five key elements of the Regents reform agenda, school libraries with certified school librarians play a crucial role in student achievement, curriculum development and instruction. Information and digital literacy is recognized as a critical aspect of each student’s education. The school librarian is a true educational partner with every teacher and administrator in providing the best possible learning experience for each child.”
