The word transition can be scary and exciting as it brings up feelings of starting something new and unknown. The transition to middle school can be especially challenging for students and parents. We want to help you succeed and feel confident in your new role as a parent of a middle school student.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Talk about middle school in a positive way! Your student will often adopt your attitude- show them that this is an exciting endeavor.

  2. Talk about, practice, and adopt an organization strategy. This may mean color-coding binders, conducting a weekly backpack/locker clean-up, preparing for the week ahead of time, and helping your child keep their planner up to date.

  3. Discuss social skills. One of the things that makes students and parents uneasy about middle school is the social aspect. Talk about what it means to be a good friend, how to communicate effectively with peers and teachers and who can help when there is trouble. Practice certain social situations with your student and give examples of how to respond.

  4. Get familiar with Greenville Middle Academy’s website. There is a wealth of information there! Our teachers do a great job of keeping their websites up to date with homework information, test dates, and more. You can also visit our school counselor’s webpage to find helpful articles about this transition period.

  5. Create an advocate. Encourage your child to become their own advocate. Teach them how to approach their teacher about a test grade, homework issue or student issue. This will take some time, but it is such a valuable skill.

  6. Get involved, and come see us! Visiting the school on designated days can provide a level of comfort. It will help you get to know exactly where your child is spending his/her day. Consider joining our PTA and getting involved through numerous activities and events planned by our supportive PTA.
