Class Description:
Leisure Sports is a one unit course that will promote physical, mental, ethical, and social development of each student through lectures, demonstrations, games (individual and team), practice, sportsmanship, role-playing, trial and error learning, and teamwork. Students will be able to design and develop a personalized physical fitness program, participate regularly in health-enhancing physical activity beyond the physical education class. PREREQUISITE: Physical Education 1.
Class Objectives:
Understand the components of physical fitness and how they relate to overall physical wellness.
Understand the importance of engaging in lifelong sports such as tennis, badminton, etc. for long term fitness.
Develop collaboration skills by working with others through team sports.
Develop a better understanding of rules and skills for both team sports and individual sports.
Grading:
Daily participation, cooperation, and effort are key components of this class, along with performance based grading, and some written assignments. It is extremely important that students are in class and properly suited for participation EVERY day.
Daily Participation:
Twenty (20) Daily Participation Points are possible for every class period. The following deviate from the daily norm:
Unexcused Absence (-20)
Non-Participation (-20)
Not Wearing Proper Footwear (tennis shoes) (-20)
Use of Cell Phones (-10) and student will receive a detention
Leaving class for more than 5 minutes (-10)
Major/Minor Grades:
Students will be tasked with completing both written and performance based skills assessments for each unit.
Major assignments will be worth 60% of their overall quarter grade.
Minor assignments will be worth 40% of their overall quarter grade.
Students will not be allowed to retake any major/minor assessment.
Class Policies and Guidelines:
Proper Attire:
Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing for the Physical Education setting and follow the school dress code. Appropriate PE attire includes:
Athletic / Tennis Shoes
Athletic T-Shirt (long sleeve / sweatshirt are acceptable if the student chooses to wear them)
Athletic Bottoms (shorts, sweatpants, etc.)
No Jeans (includes no colored jeans or jean shorts)
Locks and Lockers:
Students will receive a locker at the beginning of the semester. Students will report directly to the locker room at the beginning of class. Students will have 7 minutes to dress out and meet in their designated meeting place, their teacher will communicate this with them on the first day. If you are not present at this time you will be considered tardy or absent depending on when you arrive to class. Students will get 7 minutes at the end of class to dress back out into their schools and cool off before class changes.
Expectations:
Be on time, students should be dressed out and in their assigned spot 7 minutes after the tardy bell.
NO BULLYING or NEGATIVITY
Students will respect the rights, property and privacy of others.
Students will not have any food, beverages or gum in the gym or during class at any time. Water bottles with water are OK.
Students will not leave the supervision area without permission. A zero will be given for leaving the gym or gate area before the bell or dismissal by the teacher.
Students will clean up their equipment and wait to be dismissed to the locker rooms.
Make Ups:
Unexcused Absences for daily participation grade CANNOT be made up. Therefore, it is extremely important for students to clear all absences through the Attendance Office in the allotted time.
Excused Absences for daily participation grades CAN be made up. Students will receive full credit for the day their absence was excused.
Students will be allowed to make up all major assignments. Students will need to schedule their makeup date with their teacher.
Parent / Doctor Notes:
When a student is to be excused from participation in class for 3 or less days (recovering from a bad cold, sprained ankle, etc.), they must bring a written statement from home stating the reason and dates to be excused. These days are considered excused, non-participation days and do not need to be made-up.
Any student needing to be excused for more than 3 days must have a written notice from their doctor stating how long the student should be excused. The Doctor's note should include a return to participation date. These days are considered excused, non-participation days and do not need to be made-up.
If a student will be unable to participate in class for more than one week, the student will be assigned alternative work.
I have read and understand the expectations of the Leisure Sports class and will follow them to the best of my ability.
